In general, there are two parts to teaching any Dharma: teaching the preliminaries and teaching the main subject. First, teaching the preliminaries includes: how the teacher teaches, how the student listens, and how the two engage in teaching and listening. First, the teachers, the fully enlightened Buddhas, teach the Dharma through three kinds of miracles. That is, through the miracle of the body's magical power, they gather the disciples who have not yet gathered, and make those who have gathered have faith. Through the miracle of the mind's universal expression, they show them according to their intelligence, faculties, and abilities. Through the miracle of the speech's subsequent manifestation, they proclaim the corresponding six kinds of Dharma in their own languages with the voice of Brahma, according to their own abilities. The teachers, the Arhats, teach through three kinds of purity. That is, they observe whether the listener's vessel is pure, whether the disciples to be tamed have gathered, and examine their minds with clairvoyance, and then teach the Dharma to those whose minds are pure. The speaker's language is pure, without stuttering or errors, and the voice is clear and pleasing to the ear, and he teaches with the language of having abandoned afflictions. The content expressed in the scriptures is pure, as he has heard it from his own teacher, the fully enlightened Buddha, etc., without adding or subtracting words, and without errors in meaning, and he teaches by holding it with the Dharani of non-forgetfulness. Then, why don't those great Shravakas rely on the three kinds of miracles when teaching the Dharma? Because the Shravakas have four kinds of unknowing factors, they cannot teach through the three kinds of miracles. That is, they do not know by the eon of place, such as Maudgalyayana's son not knowing the field of the un-enlightened Buddha, the radiant and adorned. They do not know by the eon of time, such as Shariputra not knowing the seed of liberation of the householder Shri. They do not know the endless fruit of the endless cause. As it is said: Even in one pattern of a peacock's feather, there are different kinds of causes. Knowing these is omniscience, and it is not unknowable by omniscient wisdom. Like this. They do not know the many Buddhadharmas, such as the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, and the eighteen unmixed qualities.
