Indeed, it appears as if others are drinking, washing, vomiting, and so on. Similarly, we go from our own homes to all directions for certain matters and affairs. In those places, although there are encounters with some people, conversations, rejoicing, and so on, there is nothing new to hear or learn, just like rivers. This is the first of the two, the metaphor and the meaning. Also, like a boat that goes from this shore to the other to ferry others across, and then returns, going back and forth without ceasing. That boat sometimes carries merchants, sometimes other guests, sometimes women, monks, lamas, Brahmins, thieves, butchers, and so on. But when that boat returns, it is the same as before, neither diminished nor increased. It has not done good or bad to anyone, it is just as it was before, but that boat still needs to go from this shore to the other, and from the other to this shore, again and again. Similarly, I also go from my own home to another's home, and then return to my own home, going back and forth like that again and again. At that time, sometimes I encounter men, sometimes women, sometimes children, or see them, but from those people, I have not heard or learned anything new that I had not heard before. Like a boat, I still need to go again and again, this is the second of the two, the metaphor and the meaning. Also, those people's bodies enter the boat to be ferried across the water, and then come out of the boat, but from inside the boat, that person gains or obtains nothing at all. On that boat, that person's body is not changed or left behind at all, the boat is the same as before, and the person enters and exits as before, but it is not entirely meaningless for that person to enter the boat. Just like that metaphor, I also enter and exit from my own home to another, but without hear

There is nothing new to be said, Nor is it that my own affairs are not accomplished. Therefore, this is illustrated by the example of the body entering a boat. This is also a combination of three things: example and meaning. Among them, water is the foundation, and the boat enters the water. The body enters the boat. The boat is in the water, and the body is on the boat. Due to their sequence, dependence, and the relationship of being relied upon, the three examples of water, boat, and body are arranged in order. Furthermore, I often go to the Sangha for the sake of the rituals or good deeds of people in other places who have become sick or died. There, I engage in recitations, readings, and general meditations for the benefit of others. Sometimes I also come and go for my own small matters, and therefore three examples are listed in order. Going for the sake of the patron's (ཡོན་བདག་) rituals is related to the example of a river. Rivers remove the dirt and thirst of travelers, do many beneficial things, sustain life, and eventually flow into the great ocean. Similarly, removing the dirt of disease, eliminating the harm of evil spirits, like eliminating the pain of thirst, enhancing the power of medicine, and so on, doing many beneficial things, and prolonging life, in order to expand these activities through dedication, eventually flowing into the ocean of omniscience (རྣམ་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་མཁྱེན་པ་), therefore it is related to the example of water. Going to arrange a place for the dead is related to the example of a boat. Guests want to go from this shore to the other shore, but because the road is blocked by a large river, they cannot go by their own strength. If one relies on the Sangha of me and other noble ones, and the great boat of the sacred Dharma, then the consciousness of the Bardo (བར་དོ་), like a person in the water, is easily transferred, in order to settle them on the land of liberation, this is like the example of a boat. Going for temporary small matters is related to the example of the body. The body enters the boat, not for the sake of the water, nor for the sake of the boat. Nor is it for the sake of anyone else, the body enters the boat only to allow oneself and the hats and clothes attached to oneself to cross the water, this is similar to that.
