Therefore, through experience, people develop a cognition of height. If one wants to prove that the minds of sentient beings operate as they truly are, then the previous argument is uncertain. Similarly, whether sentient beings develop non-sentient cognitions, and whether other sentient beings develop cognitions of other sentient beings, needs to be examined and refuted, the former being sufficient to understand. Furthermore, is the basis for the arising of sentient beings' minds manifest or hidden? If it is the former, then the object is identical to the sentient being, because no other manifest basis is seen apart from it. If it is the latter, then when young children engage without examination, sentient beings' minds will not arise. The second view, which posits cognition first and then examines, the view that the arising of sentient beings' minds implies the existence of a 'self' will be refuted later. The third view is attachment to the skandhas (aggregates). Then, is the skandha itself considered a sentient being? Or does it exist in the skandhas like the mandala assembly? Or is it separate from the skandhas like a thorn that has fallen off? Or do the skandhas not exist at all? If it is the first case, then other things that exist independently from the skandhas will disappear. If it is the second case, is the Pudgala (person) permanent or impermanent? If permanent, then happiness cannot benefit and suffering cannot harm, so it will not accumulate merit or demerit. In that case, since it will not take rebirth, admitting the Pudgala is meaningless. If impermanent, then the arising and ceasing that is different from the skandhas must be observed, but since it is not observed, it is unreasonable. If it is the third case, then the Pudgala should become unconditioned, because it is considered a thing different from the skandhas. If this view is accepted, then it will also become unnecessary. If it is the fourth case, then liberation will be attained effortlessly, because there is no connection with any binding agent. The fourth view is the establishment of characteristics. If there is a Pudgala other than just the skandhas, then is it of the same nature as the seer, hearer, etc., or of a different nature? If it is the first case, then is it an examination of the seer, or is it different from seeing? If it is the first case, then the seer itself accomplishes all purposes, and there is no need for anything else, and the previous commitment is lost. If it is the second case, then it must become an action or agent of seeing, because the connection of different things is admitted. If it is an action, then it must become the basis for the agent's operation, either like a seed through generating a new similar kind, or like a potter or a person with magical powers through transforming, or like the earth through relying, or... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's like opening the door of understanding as vast as the sky. If we consider the first case, the observer becomes impermanent, thus the view of it being permanent vanishes. If we consider the second case, the observer becomes impermanent and conventional, thus the view of it being permanent and ultimate vanishes. If some emanations of a magician are autonomously emanated, then the observer would not suffer. If we consider the third case, just as one aims at the basis of karma and non-karma and at destruction, so too must one aim at it as the agent; if one does not aim at it, then it is not right. If we consider the fourth case, just as the sky can stretch and contract, etc., and does not obstruct space, so too must one aim at the observer; if one does not aim at it, then it is not right. Furthermore, just as the sky is merely considered as the removal of obscurations, if the observer is also considered in this way, then the idea of it arising autonomously in the mind vanishes. If it is an agent, then like an axe, is engaging in work necessarily dependent on the agent? Or like fire, does it sometimes engage in work autonomously without an agent? The first case is not reasonable, because just as one observes the observer and the observed separately, one does not observe the observer. If according to the second case, because of the fear of annihilation, admitting a Pudgala (藏文:གང་ཟག་,梵文天城体:पुद्गल,梵文罗马拟音:Pudgala,汉语字面意思:person) becomes unnecessary. If this Pudgala is unrelated to the observer, etc., and is something else, then all valid cognitions ( प्रमाण ) would be reversed, and admitting a non-existent Pudgala would be unnecessary. Fifth, regarding the distinction between affliction and purification: does this Pudgala possess the characteristics of affliction and purification, or is it something different from them? If according to the first case, then there would be no Pudgala different from the skandhas, because food and clothing, etc., bring benefit, imbalances in the elements, etc., bring harm, and one only sees affliction in the skandhas, not elsewhere. If according to the second case, then the statement that 'I' is called affliction and purification vanishes. Preventing the assumption that 'I' exists by first applying wisdom and then observing: does observation arise from the cause of wisdom, or from the cause of 'I'? If according to the first case, then the statement of observation of 'I' as a substance vanishes. If according to the second case, then it contradicts observing by first applying wisdom. Is the cause of observation permanent or impermanent? If it is permanent, then the statement of observation vanishes. If it is impermanent, then it cannot be the observation of 'I', because 'I' is considered a permanent substance. Is the sentient being who is the observer of the nature of diligence, or not of the nature of diligence? If according to the first case, it also cannot be observation, because the sentient being is considered permanent, so it is impossible to observe anew. If according to the second case, then... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
