Collected Teachings of Je Tsongkhapa JTs182: A Concise Guide to the Madhyamaka View by Je Rinpoche Homage to the venerable gurus! Here, since samsara (cyclic existence) has its root in the view of the aggregates (skandhas), those who seek liberation must refute it. Among the two types of self, the inherent self and the imputed self, the inherent self should be refuted primarily, because it is the main cause that leads both the wise and the foolish into samsara. Although in all treatises, the refutation of the imputed self is more extensive, this is because both our own and others' schools that assert a self, assert the self based on the object of the inherent self. Therefore, by refuting the imputed self, the inherent self is also indirectly refuted. Moreover, for those who have not been misled by worldly philosophies, it is not appropriate to argue for the sake of establishing selflessness. According to the logic that 'if the pervasive does not exist, then the pervaded does not exist,' in reality, if the imputed self is refuted, the inherent self is also refuted, but this refutation does not leave a deep impression in the mind. This is because when one is certain that the pervasive does not exist, one cannot necessarily be certain that the pervaded does not exist. Those who claim that there is a self say: 'A self does exist, because when seeing things etc. without prior thought, the minds of sentient beings arise; and if one thinks beforehand, one apprehends what exists.' The former means that if there were no self, when seeing the shape of a person's form etc., only the cognition of the shape itself would arise, but the cognition of a sentient being would not arise. But in fact, we see the cognition of sentient beings arising, therefore, besides the aggregates, there must be a 'self' or 'sentient being.' Similarly, when feeling pleasure or pain, only the cognition of the feeling itself should arise. But in fact, for those who mainly experience pleasure, we think of them as higher beings; for those who mainly experience pain, we think of them as lower beings. This is unreasonable. Similarly, when assigning names like Lhas Byin (Given by the Gods), only the cognition of the concept itself should arise, and not the cognition of a sentient being. This is also unreasonable. Furthermore, when being afflicted by desire etc., or performing actions like faith, only the cognition of the action itself should arise, and not the cognition of a wise person or a child. This is also unreasonable. When eye-consciousness etc. enter objects through their respective doors, the thought 'it is consciousness that sees' should arise, and not the thought 'I see,' that is, the cognition of sentient beings should not arise. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because the mind of sentient beings arises from non-life, there exists sentient beings independent of consciousness. Furthermore, if there are only aggregates and no self, then the thought 'I saw form,' 'I want to see' would not require the prior arising of 'my' consciousness, but should simply be the aggregates giving rise to consciousness. Because the mind engages with an object after consciousness has arisen, it is necessary for 'my' consciousness to arise first. Therefore, there exists a self independent of the aggregates. In short, the mind that thinks 'this is a sentient being' accurately engages with the object, because when seeing things without prior consciousness, the mind of engagement arises. For example, like the mind that apprehends blue. To refute this view, it must be understood through ten aspects. Those who seek liberation should thoroughly refute all objects of attachment to the view of self, and must acknowledge the existence of the Pudgala One should be skilled in the methods of refutation and establishment through reasoning, otherwise all efforts will become meaningless. If it is not to refute the Pudgala, then what is the difference? Many Sutras say to refute the truly existent Pudgala, the *Gzhi bsdus* refutes the ultimate truth, the *rnam par gtan la dbab pa bsdus* and the *Sutra Ornament* and the *Treasury of Knowledge Commentary* all say to refute substance, and these all have the same meaning. The meaning of 'real' and 'imputed' is: if a phenomenon appears in the mind, it must rely on another basis that does not match its own characteristic to appear as the image of that other basis, then this is imputed; if it does not rely on another basis but appears independently, then this is said to be real. First, refuting the view that when seeing things etc. without prior consciousness, the mind of sentient beings arises, thus believing that sentient beings are real. Is it that after seeing general objects etc., the mind of sentient beings arises towards it? Or is it that after seeing other things, this mind arises towards those other things? If the former, then this mind becomes a distorted consciousness, because this mind clings to itself as a sentient being, while sentient beings exist independently of it. If the latter, then merely seeing the object etc. itself will not give rise to this mind. Furthermore, is the basis for the arising of the mind of sentient beings after seeing something the nature of sentient beings? Or is it something else? If the former, then this mind also becomes a distorted consciousness, because this mind appears as an independent existence that does not match its own characteristic. If the latter, then one must also acknowledge that a vase is the cause for the arising of the mind of cloth. Furthermore, do you think that the mind of sentient beings arises on non-sentient beings? If you do not think so, then this contradicts direct perception. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
