Excerpts from the Teachings of Khyenno Lodro RD16: A Collection of Oral Instructions. Some oral instructions extracted from the scattered teachings of Redawa (a Gelug master): Those who are ordained and do not uphold the precepts, violating the Buddha's teachings, are thieves of the world. Those who speak crookedly but think of themselves as upright, those whose speech is vulgar and unrefined, do not conform to the conduct of a practitioner. I will always distance myself from hypocrisy and its actions, and follow sincerity and frankness. Those who speak recklessly but think of themselves as brave, those who do not restrain their speech, do not conform to the conduct of a practitioner. I will always distance myself from nonsense and madness, and follow peace and tranquility. Those who disguise their appearance but think of themselves as noble, those whose actions are deceitful and cunning, do not conform to the conduct of a practitioner. I will always distance myself from deception and flattery, and follow honesty and reliability. Those who act indulgently but think of themselves as upright, those who do not restrain their senses, do not conform to the conduct of a practitioner. I will always distance myself from vulgarity and carelessness, and follow prudence and discipline. Those who are busy with many affairs but think of themselves as capable, those who like distraction and dispersion, do not conform to the conduct of a practitioner. I will always distance myself from worldly hustle and bustle, and follow simplicity and few desires. Those who crave pleasure and wealth but think of themselves as fortunate, Those who have strong desires do not conform to the conduct of a practitioner. I will always distance myself from worldly entanglements, and follow contentment and few desires. Those who frequently go in and out of towns but think of themselves as taming beings, those who pursue fame and offerings, do not conform to the conduct of a practitioner. I will always distance myself from pursuing benefits, and follow secluded practice. Thus it is said. The teacher of the world, the teacher of gods and humans, said: Attachment to desire is the root of anger. The fulfillment of desire brings suffering, and is the root of disease and pain. Just as a leper craves scratching to relieve itching, just as a feverish patient craves drinking water to quench thirst, just as a thirsty person drinks salty water, the pursuit of desire can never be satisfied. Like delicious food mixed with poison, like honey on the edge of a razor, like a draft animal pulling a cart greedily eating grass, the fulfillment of desire is short-lived and full of harm. Like bees infatuated with scent, like deer listening to the songs of hunters, like fish swallowing meat on a hook, children who indulge in desire will quickly go to ruin. Thus it is said. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To the dust of the lotus stamen of whose feet, Brahma, Indra, Vishnu, etc., the proud of the world reverently bow with their crowns, to the protector Avalokiteśvara, I pay homage. Though much is heard, one is negligent in practicing accordingly; though hundreds of precepts are held, one is stained with the defilement of transgressions. To these vows of mine as a yogi, may you, the compassionate deity with wisdom, remember for a moment. Wherever one dwells, awareness and knowledge increase and transform, and one's own mindstream is bound by the noose of gain and respect, while the mindstreams of others are tormented by jealousy and competitiveness—in such a place, one should not remain even for an instant. From this day forth, for as long as I live, in the midst of glaciers, mountain valleys, and forests, I will dwell constantly like coral, and I will not dwell in villages or among large retinues. Without being swayed by the eight worldly concerns, until I have gained stability of mind, other than subduing my own mindstream alone, I will not diminish my own benefit through methods of benefiting others. Other than the three robes and the alms bowl, etc., the necessities for sustaining myself, I will not hold even a sesame seed's worth of gold and jewels, etc., for my own sake. I will never speak of the faults of others, and unless it is meaningful and in accordance with the Dharma, I will never engage in false teachings such as talk of war, thieves, or kings. For the sake of the Dharma, I will endure hardship and practice forbearance, and I will renounce the world and strive for liberation. I will not rely on more than four followers who are content with little and in harmony with myself. If I violate these vows, may the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and the lord of compassion, the protector Avalokiteśvara, treat me the same as dogs, pigs, sheep, and donkeys. To him who has not even a speck of fault, whose wondrous qualities are supremely adorned with glory, whose banner of fame waves in the three realms, I pay homage to the all-powerful, the god of gods. Listen, wise friends, the sun of the teachings has set on the western mountain peak, the movement of life and breath is like the flow of a river, those who desire liberation should cultivate mindfulness. Possessing the seven precious jewels and dominion over the four great continents, enjoying immeasurable life and the glory of the ten virtues, reveling in the bliss of perfect higher realms, even the glory of a universal monarch is like a tree on water. Having long dwelt on the summit of Mount Meru, reveling in the splendor of joy and bliss in the garden of assembly, revered by the assembly of immortal attendants, the one who seizes... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
