It is necessary to recognize that naked, sun-like clear awareness without error. Recognizing it in this way, Mahamudra calls it co-emergent innate wisdom. Dzogchen calls it clear light awareness, the meaning is the same, only the names are different. In short, the basis of both samsara and nirvana is established on this stream of consciousness of oneself. The experience of bliss throws one into the first of the six classes of desire realm gods. The experience of clarity throws one into the form realm. The experience of emptiness and non-thought throws one into the four formless realms of rebirth. Accumulating dullness and lethargy causes rebirth as rabbits and marmots, etc. The three poisons of attachment, hatred, and ignorance lead to the three lower realms. Even virtuous deeds, if not seized by bodhicitta, not seized by the main view, and the roots of virtue such as generosity not seized by subsequent dedication, if they are not destroyed by wrong views, not burned by anger, and not destroyed by the four causes that exhaust the roots of virtue, such as not dedicating or dedicating wrongly, then the fruits of those will appear, such as generosity bringing enjoyment, discipline bringing good rebirth, and patience bringing good looks. These are the causes of samsara. When the nature of awareness is awakened, the shell of clinging to experience, which is the cause of being born in the form and formless realms, is shattered. The cause of being born in the desire realm, the delusions of the three times, are purified, so that one can directly pursue awareness and directly present wisdom. In this way, compassion arises naturally for sentient beings who have not realized this, renunciation of samsara, bodhicitta seeking the benefit of others, and pure vision of pure appearances, etc., thus laying the foundation for liberation and nirvana. All the treatises of the wise and the experiential instructions of the realized are in agreement with this. Awareness does not cling to objects, therefore, when the clear light of the sun arises, it does not prevent other thoughts from arising, just as when the sun rises, the light is not obstructed. Each of the eight consciousness aggregates has two aspects, object and subject, so when the subject, such as mental consciousness, grasps any object, good, bad, or neutral, it deprives the opportunity for other thoughts to arise. Therefore, awareness does not arise from the state of mind, but mind arises from the state of awareness. If you understand this, you will not make a mistake. Like that, it is not enough to understand the abiding of the original nature, you must have experience. Therefore, abide in the nature of awareness, which is empty and clear, let it arise naturally, without artifice, and experience it in the view, so that you can reach the goal.

Okay. Furthermore, even if one has grasped one's own ground through meditative equipoise, if one does not mix that with circumstances and practice the skill of realization, then the antidote will not be able to overcome the circumstances. Therefore, within that excellent meditative equipoise, it is as if many frightening poisonous snakes of evil thoughts gather in one place and dwell. Therefore, due to the influence of any circumstance of attachment, such as the form of a beautiful woman, or any circumstance of hatred, such as insults from others, anger and desire, etc., will manifest. If these do not arise from within the meditative equipoise of one's own continuum, then they will not arise from flesh. Think about what they arise from—blood, skin, bones, or legs, etc. Therefore, if one cannot subdue these, then, as is clear in the teachings of "Hearing Leads to Liberation," one will be born in hell due to anger, in the realm of the hungry ghosts due to desire, in the realm of animals due to ignorance, in the realm of demigods due to jealousy, and in the realm of gods due to pride. Therefore, one must subdue these. So, how does one subdue them? The great Indian siddhas, first, after gaining stability in meditative equipoise in a secluded place, would go to marketplaces, etc., and observe the comings and goings, happiness and suffering, etc., of people, and thereby practice their skills. Then, they would turn over the nine impure cities and practice the discernment of both purity and impurity. Then, they would go to the place where the king was carrying out punishments and watch the gouging out of eyes, the cutting off of limbs, the killing, etc., and thereby practice the self-continuum of sentient beings and the self-continuum of compassion. Then, they would go to charnel grounds and, upon seeing fierce predators and malevolent non-humans, etc., they would practice fear, etc. Similarly, going to the top of a mountain, an island in a lake, a garden, etc., when the eyes see forms, repeatedly look at them; when the ears hear sounds, repeatedly listen to them, etc. Whatever arises in the mind, allow it to arise, and utter its name from the mouth. Even if the mind is non-conceptual, allow it to roam in the object. In order to cut off roaming on a single object, such as a pillar, as soon as the thought "It is a pillar" arises, immediately switch to "It is a vase," "It is a vajra," "It is a tree," etc., and without losing the ground of awareness, allow awareness to roam in the object, and thereby train in liberation upon awareness. In this way, whatever bad circumstances and conceptual thoughts arise, one can transform them into the practice of the skill of awareness. For example, when Lama Zhang Rinpoche struck his head against a cave wall, and when a thorn pierced his foot, bliss and emptiness would arise.
