Refuting Various Wrong Views Refuting Various Wrong Views Fourth, refuting various wrong views: Furthermore, those who slander the Tathāgatagarbha of the final teachings, and do not understand the meaning of emptiness as taught in the intermediate teachings, and who view all phenomena encompassed by the two truths as emptiness, what names should be given to those who hold such wrong views? The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have named them as destroyers of the holy Dharma, those with pride, those who cling to emptiness, those whose minds are distracted by emptiness, and Bodhisattvas who have newly entered the Mahāyāna path. As it is said in the *Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra*: "Alas! There are two kinds of people in the world who destroy the holy Dharma: those who cling to emptiness, and those who speak of self in the world. These two are destroyers of the holy Dharma and deniers of the holy Dharma." And as it is said in the *Sūtra*: "Āyuṣmat, clinging to the view of the person as Mount Meru is a person with great pride, but clinging to emptiness is not so." And as it is said in the *Ratnamālā Sūtra*: "The Tathāgatagarbha is not the object of those who fall into the view of the aggregates, those who delight in perverted views, and those whose minds are distracted by emptiness." And as it is said in the commentary on that *Sūtra* by Asaṅga, who attained the three grounds: "Falling into the view of the aggregates refers to ordinary beings, delighting in perverted views refers to Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and those whose minds are distracted by emptiness refers to those Bodhisattvas who have newly entered the Mahāyāna path, who have deviated from the meaning of emptiness, the Tathāgatagarbha." Please see these clear scriptural citations. So, who are these Bodhisattvas who have newly entered the Mahāyāna path? This is something that many famous scholars in Tibet have not known, and I have found a unique and wonderful explanation from the *Sūtras* and Asaṅga's good explanations. Furthermore, those who consider the intermediate teachings to be of definitive meaning say: to consider the Tathāgatagarbha and Dharmakāya to be permanent will turn into the view of permanence. The reason for this is, in the *Uttaratantra*: "Saṃsāra and Nirvāṇa, because they are realized as equal, are permanent." In the commentary on this, Asaṅga quoted the *Ratnamālā Sūtra*: "If all conditioned things

To view impermanence as annihilationism is to view it as such, becoming an incorrect view. If one views Nirvana as permanent, it is to view it as permanence, becoming an incorrect view. This quote is explained literally. This is a reversed argument, because it is the occasion for explaining the Dharmakaya with two purities, pure, self, bliss, and permanence, especially when establishing permanence. If one views the Dharmakaya as permanent, it becomes a view of permanence and becomes an incorrect view. How can it then be a cognizer of Samsara and Nirvana being equal? Whose tradition is it to posit what is not a proof as the proof of what proves the Dharmakaya is permanent? Furthermore, following the Sutra of the Precious Garland, it says, "The Dharmakaya of the Thus-Gone One has gone beyond permanence, has gone beyond bliss, self, and purity. Whichever sentient beings see the Dharmakaya in that way, see it correctly." And, "Bhagavan, those sentient beings are not inverted; they see correctly; they are the heart-sons of the Bhagavan." How does this directly contradict? Those who claim to be wise themselves are merely filled with pride. Furthermore, those who consider the final teachings to be definitive say, "If one views conditioned phenomena as impermanent, it becomes annihilationism." And, "If one views Nirvana as permanent, it becomes eternalism," which is a faulty translation. Viewing conditioned phenomena as impermanent and viewing Nirvana as permanent are not annihilationism and eternalism, but are correct views. If explained in this way, it does not contradict the earlier and later sutras, and the explanations of Asanga do not contradict each other either. Even if it is said that positing the view of impermanence as the proof that the Dharmakaya is permanent is like positing the existence of a yak in the north as proof that there is a tiger in the south, it is unrelated to the equality of Samsara and Nirvana, and is therefore called an unrelated stump. Therefore, this quote is not to be explained literally, nor is it a faulty translation. So, how should it be understood? Its meaning is this: If one views the nature of conditioned phenomena as impermanence to be removed, it is annihilationism; if one views Nirv
