Because it is seen that some people distort the Dharma due to hatred towards great figures, one should not mix attachment and aversion towards individuals with the Dharma. Starting from the Buddha's three turnings of the wheel of Dharma, one should be skilled in distinguishing between the definitive and provisional meanings, and the two truths. Even if something accords with one's own desires, if it does not accord with the pure Buddhist scriptures, one should be able to discard it like discarding food mixed with poison. Even if another person is evil, if one sees pure and excellent speech, one should be able to take it like taking honey from a thorn tree. Even if something does not accord with one's own desires, if it accords with the pure Buddhist scriptures, one should be able to accept it like accepting medicine that has a bad smell but excellent healing power. Even if another person is good, one should be able to abandon erroneous statements like abandoning a stream of poison flowing on a golden mountain. Abandoning the pure sutras, tantras, and scriptures of the Dharma King Shakyamuni, as well as the five teachings of Maitreya, the three treatises on the Mind-Only teachings by Asanga, and the works of the six ornaments prophesied by the Buddha, such as the immaculate treatises of the great Bodhisattvas who are free from error, and taking them as evidence and valid sources, instead following the treatises of some minor scholars who contradict these, are not taken as evidence or valid sources, and are full of errors, is like abandoning water with eight qualities and drinking salty water instead. This is a reversal of what should be adopted and abandoned, and is to be free from erroneous adoption and abandonment. Seeing that generating faith and belief in the virtuous elders of the past also brings the necessity of blessings, one should generate single-pointed devotion and faith, be skilled in practicing the aspect of skillful means, and with the wisdom of thoroughly distinguishing the Dharma, not just follow faith, but also be able to abandon the erroneous statements of the elders of the past and the widely spread wrong views, and possess the pure wisdom that follows the Dharma. When first hearing the pure view of the ultimate Great Vehicle from others, one should examine and recognize it with the wisdom arising from hearing, and with the belief and understanding based on pure scriptures, and with inference. In the middle, when thinking for oneself, with the wisdom arising from thinking, and with one's own reasoning and the power of things,

Recognizing and understanding through inference, and finally, during meditation, recognizing through the wisdom arising from meditation and one's own four kinds of direct perception, and understanding through experience. Possessing a pure view established from beginning to end by the three: hearing, thinking, and meditating. Just as gold is determined by burning, cutting, and polishing, so too, the three objects of measurement must be determined. When determining the manifest object of measurement, there is no harm from direct perception, which is like burning. When determining the hidden object of measurement, there is no harm from inference, which is like cutting. When determining the extremely hidden object of measurement, there is no harm from pure scriptures and the reasoning of the nature of reality, which is like polishing; skilled at determining. The ten causes of abandoning the Dharma, as stated by Lord Maitreya, are: having inferior intelligence due to not having practiced in previous lives and in this life; being afraid of and lacking faith in the profound and vast Dharma; relying on the pride of thinking one knows everything; having become obscured in this life, afflicted by Dharma due to accumulating negative karma in the past; holding the conventional, provisional meaning as supreme over the ultimate, definitive meaning; being particularly greedy and attached to gain and respect; viewing the conventional as non-existent; viewing the ultimate as non-existent, and so on; being controlled by wrong views; being controlled by relying on sinful friends who refute the true Dharma; keeping virtuous friends who hold the true Dharma at a distance; and not believing in the Great Vehicle but believing in the Lesser Vehicle, which is said to be inferior belief. These ten faults are said to be the cause of one's own decline from the profound Dharma, therefore, one must be free from these ten faults. Also, for the four: view, meditation, conduct, and result, one must be skilled at distinguishing them based on the two truths, that is, possessing these qualities. I seek such a person! Said: When engaging in sectarian debate, It is most important to have all these qualities. It is most important to have vast Dharma eyes. It is most important to be without jealousy, impartial, and neutral. It is most important to be skilled in distinguishing the two truths. It is most important to know what to accept and reject, good and bad. It is most important to hold to an infallible witness. A Dharma of sharp intelligence
