Even if it is inconsistent with the existing ones, if it is in accordance with the pure scriptures of the Buddhas, it can be accepted like a medicine that smells bad but has abundant healing effects. Even if other people are good, one can abandon slander against them like abandoning poisonous water flowing on a golden mountain. For the pure scriptures of the Sutras and Tantras of the Dharma King Shakyamuni, as well as the five Dharmas of Maitreya Bodhisattva, as well as the three treatises on the Explanation of the Mind of the Holy Sons, as well as the six ornaments prophesied by the Buddhas, etc., the works of the great Bodhisattvas who do not possess errors, as well as the immaculate treatises, etc., as proof and as valid authority, abandoning them. Following the treatises of some minor scholars who are inconsistent with these, not as proof, not as valid authority, and possessing errors, is like abandoning the river with eight qualities and drinking saline water instead, which is a reversed acceptance and rejection, and is free from evil acceptance and rejection. For the past holy elders, it is also seen that there is a need for blessings to enter through faith and belief, so one wholeheartedly believes in them, is skilled in practicing the aspect of skillful means, and does not blindly follow mere belief, but with the wisdom to thoroughly distinguish the Dharma, is able to abandon the erroneous words and widely known wrong views of the past holy elders, and possesses the sharp wisdom to follow the Dharma. When first hearing the ultimate pure view of the Great Vehicle from others, one contemplates and recognizes it with the wisdom arising from hearing, as well as the faith and inference based on pure teachings. When thinking for oneself in the middle, one understands and recognizes it with the wisdom arising from thinking, as well as the inference based on one's own reason and the power of things. Finally, when practicing, one understands and recognizes it with the wisdom arising from meditation, as well as the four kinds of direct perception and experience. Possessing a pure view established from beginning to end by the three wisdoms of hearing, thinking, and meditation. Just as distinguishing gold also requires burning, cutting, and grinding to determine it, so it is with determining the three places to be measured. When determining the manifest object to be measured, there is no harm from the valid authority of direct perception, which is like burning. When determining the hidden object to be measured,

What has been decided is not harmed by subsequent inference that is like cutting. One who is skilled at deciding what is to be measured, without hindrance, by pure scriptures and the reasoning of the nature of reality, which are like polishing. The ten causes of abandoning the Dharma, as stated by Lord Maitreya, are: having inferior intelligence due to not having practiced in previous lives and in this life; being afraid of and having no faith in the profound and vast Dharma; relying on the arrogance of thinking one knows what one does not know; due to accumulating bad karma in the past, being bound by obscurations that make one impoverished in Dharma in this life; from the perspective of the ultimate definitive meaning, clinging to the conventional provisional meaning; being particularly greedy and attached to gain and respect; viewing the conventional as completely non-existent; viewing the ultimate as completely non-existent, and so on, being controlled by wrong views; relying on evil friends who refute the correct Dharma, and thus being controlled by them; keeping virtuous friends who hold the correct Dharma at a distance; not believing in the Mahayana but believing in the Hinayana, which is said to be inferior belief. These ten faults are said to be the cause of one's own decline from the profound Dharma, so one should be free from these ten faults. Also, for the four: view, meditation, conduct, and result, one should be skilled at distinguishing them from the perspective of the two truths, that is, seeking one who possesses these qualities. It is said: When engaging in sectarian debate, It is crucial to have all these qualities. It is crucial to have the vast eye of Dharma. It is crucial to be without jealousy, impartial, and neutral. It is crucial to be skilled in distinguishing the two truths. It is crucial to know what to accept and reject, good and bad. It is crucial to hold to unerring evidence. It is crucial to be intelligent and follow the Dharma. It is crucial to have the wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditating. It is crucial to be skilled in scripture and reasoning. It is crucial to be free from the causes of abandoning the Dharma. In short, it is crucial not to contradict the Buddha's words. This is a summarizing verse. Then, one might think that it is difficult to find someone with such qualities. Although that is indeed the case, it is precisely because those who possess these qualities are rare that it is extremely rare to realize the ultimate of a tenet without error. To analyze tenets without possessing these qualities is like throwing stones in the dark.
