Collected Teachings of Dolonatha JT340 The Jataka of the Earth Protector Who Pleases the Prince 17-242 ༄༅། །The Jataka of the Earth Protector Who Pleases the Prince ༄༅། །The Jataka of the Earth Protector Who Pleases the Prince ༄༅། །Oṃ Svasti! The joyous festival of auspicious spring is a manifestation of wonders. Here, victorious over the battlefield of mental arising, it is the source of nourishment for the glorious goddesses of the directions. This supremely liberating joyous feast is marvelous! The fragrant scent of sweetness wafts, and wondrous images appear in all directions. Fully embracing this exuberant joy is like the beautiful face of one who captivates. The combination of wondrous tales, here like the strings of a Gandharva's daughter's lute, follows after, becoming the nectar for the ears of sentient beings. Those who are very accustomed to the correct path and are empowered by aspiration, needless to say, engage in virtue without being urged by others. Therefore, one should become completely accustomed to virtue. It is said that at one time, nourished by the nectar of past good deeds, a prince dwelling in a palace, like treating himself, through countless offerings and generosity, perfectly accomplished the lord of men. He was called the god "Mukunda," with the four oceans as his belt, and the earth as the dwelling place of beings. Wherever he went, he could do as he pleased. The command of that wise Earth Protector, like the rising sun shining on the eastern mountains, shone brightly with a radiant diadem on the heads of all kings. It is said that in the lineage of Tipura in the east, a royal family of the lunar lineage practiced the noble Avalokiteśvara for six months. In a dream, the noble Lokeśvara appeared in the form of a Brahmin and asked him what he desired. 17-243 "Noble One, I and all my lineage wish to obtain kingship." Then the Noble One said, "There are few in the world who possess merit, but your lineage will be so for fifteen generations." Having said this, he disappeared. Afterwards, in order to make offerings to the Noble One, he set out for Khasarpaṇi and eventually arrived there, where he made offerings and resided. At that time, the chiefs of the race of the southeastern country of Oḍiśa said, "We were formerly kings."

In the past, there was happiness, but now there is no peace due to strife. Let us seek a king, so they went to many places in search. Eventually, they brought back the son of the royal family who worshipped Khasarpani, placed him on the lion throne, and crowned him. He was also known as Agama Raja. His eighth-generation descendant was King Mukunda Deva. The lands of Odisha, Gahura, Bagala, Boda, Jari Khanda, and Kalinjara were already under his domain. Through the strength of his army, he conquered the kingdom of Trililinga and most of the central regions, bringing them under his rule, and he was known as the King Lord of Elephants. The son of that king, named Varaparamabharari, was the son of one who resided in the lands of Magadha, with territories that were destroyed and Prayaga. It is said that the great accomplished Kanhapa's emanation, with the fearless truth, the venerable Lama Kunga Drolchok, took rebirth. On the day of his birth in the city of Gaya, a naked yogi with ashes smeared on his body appeared on the top floor of the palace, no one knew where he came from. At that time, the Brahmins who were devoted to the sacrificial rites thought he was unclean and said that the yogis of the twelve sects were of licentious conduct, and this behavior was not suitable for us who delight in pure conduct, so they told the yogi not to stay here. As a result, both the yogi and the offerings disappeared, and they discussed among themselves, wondering who it was, whether human or non-human. At that moment, another yogi appeared and said, "Dampa Guru Namaste Namo (དམ་པ་གུ་རུ་ན་མཱ་སྟེ་ན་མོ་)" (Sanskrit: paramagurunamastedanamo, Roman transliteration: paramagurunamastedanamo, meaning: Supreme Guru, I prostrate), and then he also disappeared. Later, on another occasion, when a grand birth celebration was being held, because the father king had always been devoted to heretical practices, he forbade other ordained monks from entering within a radius of eight yojanas, and every day he had people on horseback and mules survey the terrain. In this way, for nine days, those who had previously resided there were expelled, and those who arrived suddenly were not allowed to enter. On the morning of the tenth day, the king
