English version: In a short while, suddenly there appeared all kinds of gold, silver, and precious jewels, and the granaries and storehouses were filled with grain, wheat, and wealth. At that time, the Elder Wonderful Moon (Miaoyue Zhangzhe, referring to a lay practitioner) gazed upon the World Honored One, his eyes never leaving, and he circumambulated the Buddha hundreds of thousands of times. He prostrated at the Buddha's feet and then withdrew. Then, the World Honored One said to Ananda (one of the Buddha's ten principal disciples, known for his exceptional memory): 'Today, go to the home of the Elder Wonderful Moon and see all his possessions, the grain and wheat, the gold, silver, and precious jewels, and the various vast granaries and storehouses, all filled to the brim.' When Ananda heard the Buddha's teaching, he quickly went to the residence of the Elder Wonderful Moon in the great city of Kaushambi (an ancient Indian city). Upon arriving and entering, he saw all his possessions, the mountains of grain and wheat, the gold, silver, and precious jewels, and the various vast storehouses, all completely filled. When Ananda suddenly saw such a thing, he was inwardly astonished, his face broke into a smile, and his heart was filled with love, joy, and elation. After receiving the Buddha's instruction, Ananda returned to the Buddha's place, prostrated at the World Honored One's feet, and said to the Buddha: 'For what reason did the Elder Wonderful Moon obtain such vast blessings, great wealth, vast storehouses, and the accumulation of all kinds of wealth, grain, wheat, gold, silver, and precious jewels, all filled to the brim? Excellent, World Honored One, I hope you will explain this matter to me.' The Buddha told Ananda: 'This Elder Wonderful Moon has great wisdom, because he is able to make the vow to remember and uphold, never forgetting, receiving, reciting, making offerings, and revering, contemplating the wonderful principles within, and generating great compassion, explaining this Dharma for the sake of other sentient beings, enabling you to obtain inconceivable and supremely wonderful merit and virtue, and in immeasurable lifetimes, constantly expounding this Dharma for the gods and the people of the world. Ananda, this Dharani (Zongchi, referring to a mantra or true word) is truly rare and unprecedented. All the heavenly demons, the Great Brahma Kings, the Shramanas (ordained ascetics), the Brahmins (ancient Indian priestly class), and the gods, humans, Asuras (a type of non-divine, non-ghostly being), etc., should always generate the mind of respect and reverence for this Auspicious World-Sustaining Dharani, and should not give rise to thoughts of contempt or destruction. Ananda, this Auspicious World-Sustaining Dharani cannot be destroyed by any other mantras. If sentient beings without good roots, sentient beings with meager blessings, are unable to even temporarily hear it, how much less can they know this Dharani, and how could it exist in their hearts in such a scripture?' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

English version What is remembered, what is spoken by the mouth, what is received, held, read, and recited. Why is it so? Because this *Śrīmantā Lokadhāraṇī* (吉祥持世陀罗尼, Auspicious World-Sustaining Dharani) is proclaimed by all Tathagatas (如来, Thus Come Ones), blessed by all Tathagatas, and approved by all Tathagatas. It is a law that is explained, offered, respected, praised, supremely subtle, profound, and difficult to understand. All Tathagatas, each with the same mind, proclaim this wonderful law with one voice, so that all sentient beings can easily understand it. Now, for the sake of sentient beings who suffer greatly from poverty, disease, evil terrors, all kinds of hindrances, and undesirable things, those who receive this will be made abundant, peaceful, and happy. At that time, Ānanda (阿难陀), having heard the Buddha speak this *Śrīmantā Lokadhāraṇī*, generated a mind of remembrance, received, held, read, and recited it, contemplated and understood it, and respected and offered to it. Ānanda rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and joined his palms towards the Buddha. At that time, Ānanda, having paid homage to the Buddha, generated a sincere mind and spoke this gāthā (誐他, verse) in praise, saying: 'Inconceivable is the World Honored One, the Buddha; the Dharma (法, law) spoken by the Buddha is inconceivable; inconceivable is the generation of a joyful mind; inconceivable is the receiving of retribution in accordance with the present; the teacher of gods and humans, with all-knowing wisdom, has crossed to the other shore and is free from birth and death; having attained the supreme fruit and become the Dharma King, I now praise the Buddha's fearlessness.' At that time, Ānanda, having spoken this praise, rejoiced and said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One, what is the name of this sutra (经, scripture)? How should I receive and hold it?' The World Honored One said to Ānanda, 'As you asked Śrīcandra (妙月长者, Glorious Moon Elder) earlier about the method of receiving and holding all the treasures and storehouses, this sutra is named *The Auspicious World-Sustaining Dharani Sutra Spoken by All Tathagatas*. You should receive and hold it in this way.' Having spoken this sutra, Ānanda and all the bhikṣus (比丘, monks), bodhisattva-mahāsattvas (菩萨摩诃萨, great bodhisattvas), all the devas (天人, gods), asuras (阿素啰, demigods), gandharvas (彦达嚩, celestial musicians), and others in the world, all greatly rejoiced, believed, accepted, and practiced it, paid homage, and withdrew. *The Great Vehicle Holy Auspicious World-Sustaining Dharani Sutra Spoken by the Buddha* --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
