English version 'Buddha Speaks the Great Vehicle Sacred Auspicious World-Holding Dharani Sutra' Translated by Tripiṭaka Dharma Master Shramana Fa Tian, bestowed with the Purple Robe by Imperial Decree, from Nālandā Monastery in Magadha, Central India, Western Heaven Thus have I heard. At one time, the World Honored One was in the Great Thorny Forest in the country of Kauśāmbī, together with a great assembly of four hundred and fifty Bhikshus. All were well-known great Arhats. Also present were Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas and assemblies of Buddhas, all gathered to respectfully surround and listen to the Buddha preach the Dharma. At that time, in the assembly, there was a wealthy man named Wonderful Moon, residing in the great city of Kauśāmbī. This wealthy man possessed great wisdom, skillful means, and was adept. He had many sons and daughters, and his servants and retinue were complete. All possessed good roots and had generated great good minds. At that time, the wealthy man Wonderful Moon went to see the World Honored One. Having arrived at the Buddha's place, he respectfully joined his palms, prostrated at the Buddha's feet, and circumambulated the Buddha hundreds of thousands of times. He then retreated to one side and sat down peacefully. The wealthy man Wonderful Moon then said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One, today I wish to ask the Tathāgata Arhat Samyak-saṃbuddha. I have doubts in my heart, and I hope that the World Honored One, with boundless compassion, will explain the Dharma for me and resolve my doubts.' At that time, Śākyamuni, the World Honored One, said to the wealthy man Wonderful Moon, 'I now allow you to ask whatever you doubt in your heart. You should not harbor your doubts within yourself.' The wealthy man Wonderful Moon, having heard what the Buddha said, again said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One, if good men and good women frequently suffer from poverty, how can they avoid suffering from poverty? And how can those who are often sick avoid the suffering of illness?' At that time, the World Honored One, who possessed all wisdom, said to the wealthy man Wonderful Moon, 'Why do you only harbor doubts about poverty and ask such a question?' English version: 'I am now poor, while the Sugata (one of the ten titles of Tathagata, meaning 'well-gone') possesses numerous relatives, male and female servants, and a home filled with wealth. Now, please explain to me, O Bhagavan (Blessed One), according to my questions. By what means can poor beings be freed from poverty? By what means can sick beings be free from the suffering of illness? How can one obtain the necessities of life, such as wealth and millet, so that the storehouses are full? How can one see what one loves? How can one obtain gold, silver, mani (jewel), pearls, lapis lazuli, conch shells, jade, coral, cowrie shells, and vajra (diamond) treasures, so that the treasuries are overflowing, and I can give without end? How can one obtain a household of relatives, both male and female, young and old, all noble and free?' Thus spoke the Elder Wonderful Moon to the Bhagavan. At that time, the Buddha further said to the Elder Wonderful Moon: 'In the past, countless kalpas (aeons) ago, in that era, a Buddha appeared in the world, named Dṛḍhavajrasāgarameghanirghoṣa Tathagata (the Tathagata of the Firm Vajra Ocean Great Sound), Arhat (Worthy One), Samyak-saṃbuddha (Perfectly Enlightened One), Vidyā-caraṇa-saṃpanna (Endowed with Knowledge and Conduct), Sugata (Well-Gone One), Lokavid (Knower of the World), Anuttara (Unsurpassed One), Puruṣadamyasārathi (Tamer of Men), Śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ (Teacher of Gods and Humans), Buddha (Enlightened One), Bhagavat (Blessed One). I heard a dharani (mantra) from that Bhagavan, named Śrīvasudhārī (Glorious Earth Holder). After hearing this Dharma, I constantly upheld, recited, sincerely made offerings, and widely proclaimed this dharani to others. Good man, I now speak this dharani for you, which can protect you, so that humans cannot harm you, non-humans cannot harm you, Yakṣas (demons) cannot harm you, Rākṣasas (ogres) cannot harm you, Pretas (hungry ghosts) cannot harm you, Bhūtas (spirits) cannot harm you, Piśācas (flesh-eating demons) cannot harm you, Kumbhāṇḍas (gourd-shaped demons) cannot harm you, Apsarās (celestial nymphs) cannot harm you, Pūtanās (foul-smelling demons) cannot harm you, Kaṭapūtanās (extremely foul-smelling demons) cannot harm you, those who eat excrement cannot harm you, those who eat urine cannot harm you, those who eat various clean or unclean things cannot harm you. Wonderful Moon, if any good man or good woman obtains this Śrīvasudhārī Dharani Sutra, and respectfully makes offerings in their own home, or in their hands, or contemplates this Sutra, or hears this Sutra, they will be able to uphold, recite, make offerings, or widely explain it to others.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

English version: Explaining the meaning and benefits. If a good man or good woman can uphold this scripture, they will be protected day and night, be peaceful and happy, have abundant food and drink, and obtain great merit. If someone can sincerely make offerings to this 'Auspicious Dhāraṇī for Upholding the World,' they are making offerings to all Tathāgata Arhat Samyak-saṃbuddhas (Tathāgata Arhat Samyak-saṃbuddha, the Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One) of the past, present, and future. If someone can regularly recite this dhāraṇī four times in the middle of the night according to the Dharma, that person will be protected by the devas (devas, gods), who will come to guard them, rejoice, and be delighted. Moreover, the devas will personally descend and rain down supreme, delicious, and sweet food and drink. The assembly of devas will be delighted with all the Tathāgatas, delighted with all the Buddha-Dharma, delighted with the Buddha's non-dual wisdom, delighted with the harmonious Sangha (Sangha, monastic community), and delighted with the Dharma masters who preach the Dharma. The Buddha then told the Elder Wonderful Moon: 'Now, for you and all sentient beings of the future, I will enable you to obtain vast benefits and peace and happiness.' Then He spoke the Auspicious Dhāraṇī for Upholding the World, which is as follows: Namo (Homage) Ratna (Jewel) Trayāya (to the Three Jewels).
