The Collected Teachings of the Great Scholar Shakya Chokden skc136, 'The Key to the Vajra Illusion Wheel: Opening the Great Treasury of the Seven Treatises on the General Presentation of Pramana'. Homage to Manjushri). Upon a throne revered by many, He establishes the king of Dharma. Riding upon the chariot of fame, I bow to you with reverence. The characteristics of pramana, as explained by the wise of the past, If abandoned and contemplated with evil intellect, They are like water-born trees, Though without essence, the foliage of words flourishes. From the garden of the three realms of scriptures, He propagates a garland of wish-fulfilling trees. Here, the general characteristic of pramana is: A cognition that newly realizes its object of measurement and agrees with the determination, and is non-deceptive in its object of engagement. The object of measurement of direct perception is only the own-character; the object of measurement of inference is only the universal-character. The object of engagement of both is only the own-character, but they are distinguished by the manner of engagement. A direct perception that measures the universal-character is not accepted even to the extent of a hair's tip, because otherwise it would be an imputation. All pramanas, the object and object of measurement that it becomes a pramana for is only the object of engagement. Because in the treatises of the teachers, it appears that only non-deceptive cognition is established as a pramana by stating it as a reason. It is not seen that merely newly realizing the object of measurement is stated as a means of proof. The phrase 'object of engagement that agrees with the determination' is a supplement to the words. If merely newly realizing the object of measurement does not establish it as a pramana, what is the reason? The answer is: all inferences, although they newly realize the universal-character, are not pramanas; all incorrect cognitions, although they newly realize their object of measurement, are not non-deceptive in the object of engagement; and the direct perceptions of self-awareness, although they newly realize their own nature, are not established as pramanas because they are non-deceptive, but are established as pramanas because they are non-deceptive with respect to external objects. The means of proof for these are, in order: if inference does not cognize the universal-character, then there is no other pramana that cognizes the universal-character. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because of that. If the general characteristic has become a valid means of cognition (pramāṇa), then it will not deceive it (the specific characteristic). But if that is the case, it will become a specific characteristic, because it becomes the object of the valid means of cognition. Also, like the conceptual thought that grasps sound as permanent, even if it newly cognizes its object to be measured, it is not a valid means of cognition, because it does not deceive its object. It is like the mind that clings to a jewel from the light of a lamp. It cognizes that, because it newly cognizes its own nature. Even so, it does not accept that as its object, because if the object of any outward-looking consciousness is an external object, then the external object must be a specific characteristic. For example, the self-cognizing direct perception that experiences the inference of sound being impermanent, although it does not deceive the specific characteristic of sound being impermanent, it does not accept that as its object. The reason it is not that is also because if the object of an inward-looking consciousness is consciousness, then consciousness must be a specific characteristic. In this way, if an outward-looking consciousness is taken as the basis, and it is the object of an inward-looking consciousness, then it is not pervaded by its object; if an inward-looking consciousness is taken as the basis, and it is the object of an outward-looking consciousness, then it must be admitted that it is pervaded by its object, because for those, there is no non-deception that contradicts the determination. Furthermore, all outward-looking direct perceptions are minds that newly cognize their respective apprehended objects, but that is not considered a valid means of cognition, because the main object for which it is considered a valid means of cognition is only the external object, because it is an outward-looking direct perception. As explained in this way, if it is consciousness, it is pervaded by self-awareness, but if it is that, it is not pervaded by direct perception and valid means of cognition; if it is self-awareness, then it is direct perception for its own nature, but it is not pervaded by general direct perception; if it is a valid means of cognition for one dharma, then it is not pervaded by valid means of cognition; if it is non-deceptive for one object, then it is not pervaded by being non-deceptive for its own object. These should be understood. Then, which scriptures show that a valid means of cognition needs the nature of non-deception? 'A valid means of cognition is a non-deceptive possessor, it is consciousness.' and 'Also, it is the illuminator of the meaning of the unknown.' Both of these scriptures say that for the specific characteristic, the newly non-deceptive awareness, as a part of its nature, is needed, there is no difference. Even so, the intention of the separate explanations is for the purpose of summarizing Dignāga's explanation. At that time, if it is a non-deceptive awareness, it must be newly non-deceptive, because for the decisive consciousnesses, non-deception is... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
