Therefore, it is said that the immaculate body, abandoning the former body and taking the latter many times, is the inconceivable death and transference. As it was said at that time: 'For the sake of manifesting joy in Nirvana, I consider it to be the highest realization.' And 'by the power of previous actions,' etc., by being free from two fears, abiding in an inferior place, and entering the Great Vehicle with that body, or transforming that body into various emanations, thereby engaging in various activities. For those with remainder, two fears arise: the ripening aggregate of karma, and the doubt of annihilationism. The first fear is eliminated by abandoning the previous aggregate; the second fear is eliminated by obtaining the immaculate body. But those without remainder cannot eliminate it, because there, the basis for clinging to self has been cut off, and they do not even cling to a self that is merely conceptual. To eliminate this fear, they accumulate immaculate karma in order to obtain the mind-made body. Regarding the identification of this body, it has been said in the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*; and the manner in which it is obtained has been said in the *Bhadrakalpika-sūtra*, so it should be consulted there, and I will not say more here. The third is that, regarding this classification, the commentators usually say: the inferior Arhat, having manifested the Nirvana without remainder, accumulates immaculate karma, thereby obtaining the mind-made body, and so on; or that the same one who has passed into Nirvana without remainder, obtains the mind-made body in a pure land, with the same name and meaning, and then is awakened by the rays of light of the Buddha, etc., thereby entering the Great Vehicle, and so on. Although they say this, not one has truly recognized the target. Furthermore, there are the statements about the mind-made body in the *Ratnagotravibhāga* and other scriptures, and in the *Abhisamayālaṅkāra*: 'Combined with inconceivable transformation, and with correct birth.' etc., which seem to have different meanings. The understanding of this is: to obtain that body, one must manifest the Nirvana without remainder; and the non-returner, because he has not separated from attachment to the three realms, can only obtain an emanation body. I think this should be examined, in two points: the meanings of Nirvana without remainder and the mind-made body are unrelated, and the quotation from the *Abhisamayālaṅkāra* also proves this. The first point is that the meanings and terms of these two are not consistent, because the causes are different: the mind-made body is formed by the seeds of ignorance and the accumulation of immaculate karma. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the other hand, Nirvana is not in need of anything, pursuing the state of Nirvana without remainder. The difference in essence lies in that one is the body of wisdom, and the other is the cessation of individual analysis. The difference in terminology lies in that one explains the names and meanings of birth, old age, sickness, and death, while the other does not have such classifications. The difference in time lies in that the death of Nirvana with remainder is the cause and effect of severing future existence, and when one appears, the other necessarily does not appear. Here, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas entering Nirvana without remainder can be understood as an entry into the Mahayana through the 'Samadhiraja Sutra'. It says: 'Having obtained the body of Samadhi, one will not awaken until the end of the kalpa. For example, a drunken person, if there is no sobering up, will not become sober. Similarly, those my bodies, have obtained the name of Buddha Dharma.' It needs to be examined that the meaning of the sutra can be understood from the 'Manjushri Root Tantra'. It says that the Nirvana with remainder of the Hinayana, at the moment of death, immediately arises a mind-made body, similar to the intermediate state, with complete faculties. Merely through thought, one can reach the pure Buddha-field, and spend countless kalpas in the lotus on the throne of that Buddha. At some point, the rays of light from that Buddha will awaken them. However, there is no mention of manifesting Nirvana without remainder in the lotus. If it is said that one obtains Nirvana without remainder through a mind-made body similar to the intermediate state, it is very difficult. If it is said that the Arhats of the Hinayana, who have determined their lineage, have obtained a body without outflows and abide in Samadhi for countless kalpas, and will eventually become Buddhas, it is unreasonable. If someone asks, then let it be considered that way. In this view, what happens after awakening from Nirvana without remainder? Does a collection of consciousness or wisdom manifest after awakening, and after manifesting, does one abide in the Hinayana or enter the Mahayana? Answer: Ultimately, the view of the Three Vehicles holds that it is impossible to awaken from Nirvana without remainder. The view of the One Vehicle, however, considers it possible. Therefore, the explanation just given cannot withstand scrutiny. As stated in 'Bodhicharyavatara': 'A mind apart from emptiness, after ceasing, will arise again, like entering the formless absorptions.' The Hinayana does not have the selflessness of phenomena. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
