Collected Teachings of the Great Scholar Sakya Chokden skc127: Questions and Answers on Mind, Body, and Consciousness Questions and Answers on Mind, Body, and Consciousness Questions and Answers on Mind, Body, and Consciousness Om Svasti! Having the Dharmakāya (chos kyi sku) and its retinue, I pay homage to all worthy of reverence! I will briefly explain the questions and answers regarding the 'three aspects of mind, body, and consciousness.' Thus, after offering and vowing to compose, as it is said in the scriptures: 'The nature of mind is aggregates, its cause is cessation, therefore it is bliss.' When we recognize this supreme other shore of bliss (bde ba dam pa'i pha rol tu phyin pa), what is the manner of establishing the 'three aspects of mind, body, and consciousness' that are contrary to it, as mentioned in the Sutra of the Third Turning of the Wheel ( 'khor lo gsum pa'i mdo) and many treatises? First, a detailed explanation of the establishment of the mind-body taken by two Arhats (dgra bcom pa); then, a brief explanation of how a Bodhisattva (byang sems) who has received empowerment takes it. First is recognition, then the manner of taking the body, and then the doubts and reflections on the establishment. First is recognition: For those who have not examined this in detail, the thought may arise as to what is the difference between this body and the aggregate of name (ming gi phung po) in the Formless Realm (gzugs med khams)? Here, 'mind' does not refer to afflicted mind (nyon yid), nor even the consciousness of mind (yid kyi rnam par shes pa), but is composed of the uncontaminated proximate cause (nyer len zag med) of the mind-stream, like an image appearing in a mirror, complete with all sense bases (skye mched). As it is said in the scriptures: 'Those with bodies of wisdom...' Secondly, it is divided into three points: Who is the taker? What are the causes and conditions? How to take it? And how to recognize the mind-stream that has been taken? First, the takers are the two Arhats who abide in the Nirvana with Remainder (lhag bcas kyi myang 'das). Most commentators think that this must be someone of inferior capacity. This will be examined later. It must be someone who wants to abandon the previous aggregates. And they either fear suffering or see other necessities for taking an uncontaminated body. The cause for taking this body is the ground of ignorance and habitual tendencies (ma rig bag chags kyi sa) and uncontaminated karma (zag med kyi las). Although there are no defilements at that time, so contaminated karma is impossible, and the differences in the Great and Small Vehicles, merit, and wisdom of uncontaminated karma cannot be determined. But it is said that the motivation for this karma is subtle conceptual thought of grasping at characteristics (mtshan 'dzin gyi rnam par rtog pa phra mos byed par bshad cing). The time, etc., is on the basis of the remainder of the aggregates, which is in accordance with the propelling cause of taking rebirth (srid par skye ba). Its power and might... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The method of transformation is: the gradual abiding Samadhi, which is the same as the three existences of desire, existence, and non-existence that cause reincarnation. Generally speaking, this Samadhi requires two conditions: first, the desire to bless uncertain beings into a body with remainder before death and rebirth, so as to enter the accumulation of merit for attaining enlightenment in one lifetime; second, the desire to obtain a body without outflows. What will be discussed here is the latter, that is, first generating this intention, and then obtaining the power to gradually enter Samadhi, and finally reaching the peak of cessation Samadhi, so that the seven aggregates of consciousness together with reincarnation cease, which is non-discriminating cessation, and on the basis of Alaya consciousness, the discriminating cessation of abandoning both outflows and Vipaka is manifested, thereby abandoning the aggregate of Vipaka. At this time, as the basis of the body, there is no mind or mental factors other than the clear and aware part of Alaya consciousness. This must be wisdom, because it does not have any characteristics of consciousness. This clear awareness enables the abandonment of the previous basis and the attainment of the body without outflows to be accomplished simultaneously and completely, without the appearance of an intermediate state. After obtaining this rebirth, before entering the Mahayana, they are all Arhats of the Hinayana, but cannot be called Nirvana without remainder, because it is necessary to fully explain the immeasurable merits they possess, such as the Bodhipaksa-dharmas, the eight liberations, the eye-power, and the supernormal powers. The second case is that Hinayana practitioners abandon the remainder and the stream of consciousness is cut off; while Mahayana Abhisamayalankara practitioners, although only the clear awareness is not cut off, all the merits such as the Bodhipaksa-dharmas have been exhausted, and even if the obscuration of knowledge has not been abandoned, it will not manifest. Although there are these different views, here, the Alaya consciousness is transformed into without outflows, and can also be called the wisdom of Alaya consciousness, that is, Tathagatagarbha (藏文:བདེ་བར་གཤེགས་པའི་སྙིང་པོ།,梵文天城体:तथागतगर्भ,梵文罗马拟音:Tathāgatagarbha,汉语字面意思:如来藏), also known as consciousness without outflows. It is the basis of the previously obtained immeasurable merits, and also the basis for generating previously non-existent merits. In the Hinayana it is the mind-made body, in the pure land it is non-discriminating wisdom, and in the Buddha land it is mirror-like wisdom. In the Mantrayana, it is also called Vajra of Mind (藏文:སེམས་ཀྱི་རྡོ་རྗེ།,梵文天城体:चित्तवज्र,梵文罗马拟音:Cittavajra,汉语字面意思:心金刚), which is the basis of practice for all paths. As the basis of that body, it once again becomes the ground of ignorance and the auxiliary condition of karma caused by subtle manifestation habits. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
