Collected Teachings of the Great Paṇḍita Śākya Chokden skc11: A Letter to Friends, Called 'The Wheel of Brahmā' 'A Letter to Friends, Called 'The Wheel of Brahmā'' Homage! This letter, called 'The Wheel of Brahmā,' which subdues the pride of self-creation, is sent to the ears of the great masters of the Madhyamaka (the heart of the doctrine) in the land of snowy Tibet. You are majestic with the great burden of blue hair, seeing all dharmas as illusion. With glorious scripture and reasoning, your red eyes glare in all directions. The sound of your victorious fame greatly proclaims on the peaks of the three worlds. I pay homage to all the wise, intoxicating the hearts of proud elephants! Having trained your own mind through much listening, intending to benefit others with impartiality, possessing the wisdom to distinguish between what is and is not. This is sent to the wise men of Tibet. Here, some are intoxicated by the wine of self-creation. Their elephant-like intellect wanders impartially. From wandering everywhere without restraint, with the speech of churning the ocean of the doctrine of Nāgārjuna and his disciples. Seeing all the Buddha's words and treatises on non-duality (Advaita) interpreted differently only by their own minds, the wise should listen with a little analysis. They cling to the self, and say that the self is the agent of all bondage and liberation. This religious system, not finding a difference from the doctrines of the heretics, is seen as a place of doubt. If the self that is grasped by clinging to the self dwells on the aggregates (skandha), then the self enters the place of the object of the view of self (ātma-dṛṣṭi). How then can the wisdom of realizing no-self (anātman) be generated? If only the I imputed in dependence is the self, then the yogi's mind, seeing no-self directly, Sees that even the imputation does not exist, how can it be suitable as the basis of all actions and results (karma-phala)? Having the aspect of clinging to 'I' and 'mine,' this great ignorance born from beginningless time is proclaimed not to be the root of faults, and only the self imputed in dependence is said to be true. Then, how to explain the faults imputed by the tenets, such as the source of faults such as attachment? This statement is a secret word that alters the key points of existence (saṃsāra) and peace (nirvāṇa). If the perception of the aggregates as self is not the view of self that generates all faults, then it is inconsistent with all the vast scriptures and contradicts the collections of well-spoken words of the glorious Candrakīrti. If one clings to the self as true, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If there is clinging, why not be bound by clinging to self? If liberation is possible by merely realizing the absence of self, why is it not applicable to children? If, due to the view of the aggregates, there is clinging to self, Why not cling to self by clinging to what is mine? If you think so, what is the difference between 'self' and 'mine'? You cannot point it out. If clinging to self necessarily involves clinging to self, Why not cling to true existence by clinging to truth? If there is no self, then the agent and the experiencer, The sentient being itself does not exist, in response to this argument: The noble Chandrakirti (Sanskrit: Āryadeva) said that the imputed 'self', Experiencing the ripening of karma on the aggregates, Is for the sake of conventional truth, If that also becomes the object of the view of self, How do yogis prevent 'self'? The existence of 'self' in the aggregates is called the view of the aggregates, It is said to be the chief of all mountains of views. If merely having the same name is 'self', Why are things that merely have the same name not true in essence? The world calls the agent 'self,' but this Is the difference between internal and external tenets in proclaiming 'self' and proving 'no-self.' Thinking of the person (Sanskrit: pudgala) as self, and The absence of self of the person, this is ridiculous. Therefore, considering 'self' and persons As equal, this is the doctrine of the heretics. Clinging to the person as self, Is a great ignorance that has arisen from beginningless time, The wise consider this To be the main obstacle to generating the view of Svatantrika Madhyamaka. Some Mind-Only and Madhyamaka schools, Incorrectly interpret their own views, And claim that there are contradictions in them, They have no scruples, if others slightly Criticize them, anger, jealousy, and Huge black clouds of anger arise, With endless bad words, like the great sound of thunder, Splitting the noble Sangha into ten directions. This kind of behavior is not the behavior of the holy ones. Abandoning distorted wisdom, with upright wisdom Explaining the tenets of the wise as they are, Establishing rational tenets through debate and examination, This kind of behavior is the good behavior of the wise. Therefore, please think a little, wise people, Please prick up your ears and listen carefully to the answer. What is to be refuted by the arguments of Nagarjuna's (Sanskrit: Nāgārjuna) doctrine, Is ultimately established by reasoning, and to the wrong views, Inflicting rational harm, for the Madhyamikas, Such a commitment is the doctrine of the realists. For example, Sugata Essence of Wisdom, etc., The Buddhas prophesied that they would explain The essence of truth. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
