Biographies of Various Masters NT13: Abridged Essence of the Biography of Jetsun Rinpoche Sonam Tsemo Abridged Essence of the Biography of Jetsun Rinpoche Sonam Tsemo How He Was Born Abridged Essence of the Biography of Jetsun Rinpoche Sonam Tsemo Om, may it be auspicious! Perfected merit and wisdom, like an ocean's depth, Well-arrived, countless Indian and Tibetan scholars and siddhas, Resting at the peak of the victory banner on their crowns, To Jetsun Rinchen (Jetsun Rinpoche), I prostrate from my heart. From the wish-fulfilling lake of his biography, A portion emerges, white and clear with swirling patterns, I shall speak the wondrous sounds of its tales, Fortunate and discerning assemblies, please listen. Here, I will briefly recount the biography of Jetsun Sonam Tsemo, the eldest son of the great Jetsun Sakya Pandita, a great scholar and accomplished master. Jetsun Great Compassionate Kunga Nyingpo took two consorts. The elder consort was from Yul Tsa Morongpa, of the Jetrza lineage, named Magchik Odron, who bore three sons, of whom this great being was the eldest. His father was fifty-one years old, in the Water Dog year, when he was born at a place called Chumik Dzingkha in glorious Sakya, accompanied by many wondrous signs. At that time, on the lintel of the gate of Magadha Vajrasana in India, the dakinis wrote: 'The emanation of Manjushri, Khenpo Sonam Tsemo, has been born in Sakya, the supreme master of all Vajrayana.' Then, the Pandit of कौशाम्बी (Sanskrit, कौशाम्बी, Kauśāmbī, Kauśāmbī), Deva Mati, proclaimed it in all directions, and the news gradually spread until it was confirmed in Tibet itself. As soon as he was born, he spoke many Sanskrit words and said two or three times, 'I have transcended the conduct of a child.' At all times and in all ways, he sat only in the lotus position, which amazed everyone. From a young age, without being taught, he knew many aspects of the Dharma. Clear light constantly arose, and he remained in many samadhis. He clearly remembered and spoke of having taken birth in succession as eleven great panditas in India, including the great siddha Mitrupa. At the age of three, he directly saw the faces of glorious Hevajra, Jetsun Manjushri, and Jetsun Tara. The three tantras of Hevajra, the root tantra of Chakrasamvara. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He heard the five treatises, including the *Compendium of Topics* (Skt: Abhidharma-samuccaya) from Asanga (meaning: a Buddhist master), and kept them in mind. From his own father, he received the Vajrayana (meaning: Buddhist Tantra) empowerment and blessings, as well as all the tantras, oral transmissions, instructions, and practices, and mastered them all. Due to the blessings of Manjushri (meaning: the embodiment of wisdom), before the age of sixteen, he thoroughly understood all the teachings of Vajrayana, eliminating all doubts. Around the age of seventeen, he could recite fourteen tantras. In the area of the Ganges River (meaning: a major river in India), he was known as the undisputed expert in Vajrayana. At the age of seventeen, his father passed away, and in order to fulfill his father's wishes, he held a grand Dharma assembly. At that time, Jetsun Rinpoche (meaning: Supreme Jewel) Drakpa Gyaltsen (meaning: a Buddhist master) was thirteen years old, and he handed over the position of abbot to Drakpa Gyaltsen, saying, 'You stay in Sakya (meaning: the main monastery of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism) and give teachings. I will go to Ü-Tsang (meaning: the central region of Tibet) to listen to the Prajnaparamita (meaning: Buddhist wisdom) and Pramana (meaning: Buddhist logic) teachings.' He stayed at Sangpu Neutok (meaning: a monastery) and listened to the Dharma from Chapa Chokyi Senge (meaning: a Buddhist master) for about eleven years, becoming proficient in the Tripitaka (meaning: the Buddhist scriptures) and reaching the pinnacle of Buddhist scholarship. He offered Chapa Chokyi Senge a golden Ganjira (meaning: a type of gold ornament), the *Extensive Mother Sutra* (meaning: the extensive version of the Prajnaparamita Sutra), and countless other treasures, making him very pleased. His famous disciples included eight lions, eight lion-like ones, and four Jowo sons. The four Jowo sons were: Khon Jowo Tsemo (meaning: a Buddhist master), Khu Jowo Netsok, Ngok Jowo Lhamo, and Gnyos Jowo Woma. Among them, the most outstanding was Khon Jowo Tsemo. At the age of twenty-six, in the Fire Pig year, he composed the great treatise *The Gate to Entering the Dharma* (meaning: the name of a treatise) at the new monastery of Nala Tse in Ngari Gungtang (meaning: a place name). In it, he also created a faultless exposition on the system of Buddhist calendrical calculations. Having become a great scholar in this way, he inwardly abided in Suchness (meaning: a Buddhist philosophical term), and outwardly spent his time teaching, debating, and writing. In particular, day and night, he continuously had visions of the Yidam Hevajra (Tibetan: ཀྱཻ་རྡོ་རྗེ,Sanskrit Devanagari: हेवज्र,Sanskrit Romanization: Hevajra, Chinese literal meaning: Hevajra) and Chakrasamvara (Tibetan: འཁོར་ལོ་བདེ་མཆོག,Sanskrit Devanagari: ,Sanskrit Romanization: , Chinese literal meaning: ), as well as the Jetsun Yogishvara (meaning: one who has control over yoga) glorious Virupa (Tibetan: བིརྺ་པ་,Sanskrit Devanagari: विरूपा,Sanskrit Romanization: Virūpa, Chinese literal meaning: ), and his own father, the Jetsun Sakyapa master, constantly hearing countless Dharmas and eliminating all doubts. Through this power, he had no forgetfulness in all fields of knowledge. At the age of twenty-seven, he became a pillar of Buddhism in Jambudvipa (meaning: the world we live in). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
