The Mother Text of the Bardo from the Dzogchen Nyingpo Hung Cycle The Mother Text of the Bardo from the Dzogchen Nyingpo Hung Cycle From the Dzogchen Nyingpo Hung Cycle: The Mother Text of the Bardo is Herein. Homage to the Bhagavan, the Self-Arisen Wisdom Deity! Emaho! From the tantras, the essential pith instructions, all without exception, I, Orgyen, have well explained. For the sake of future generations, I have separately arranged the letters. May it meet with a fortunate and noble being someday! Moreover, in general, those individuals who are the most superior of faculties, having perfected the aggregates without remainder, are liberated in the bardo of the self-existing place of birth. As it is said in the tantras: Those individuals who are diligent, in that way, they may pass through to the end. Thus it is said. For those who are not liberated in that way, four bardos are taught: The bardo of the self-existing place of birth is one, from being born from the lotus of the mother until not being struck by the disease of death. The bardo of dying is two, from the outer elements being gathered until the inner breath is not cut off. The bardo of dharmata is three, from the appearance of the light of luminosity arising until not dissolving into spontaneous perfection. The bardo of existence is shown as four, from then until not entering the door of the womb. As it is said in the tantras: There are four kinds of bardos: the place of birth, dying, dharmata, and existence. Thus it is said. The so-called place of birth is the way of abiding of one's own awareness, the ground. Primordial purity, beyond speech, thought, and expression. Separated from the division of samsara and nirvana. Appearances and emptiness without demarcation. That is the nature of the original abiding. If one recognizes that, meditates, experiences, and realizes, one attains Buddhahood. If one does not recognize, does not meditate, and does not realize, delusion arises. Not touched by the mind of samsara and nirvana. Not recognizing that which abides in between. Born from the unborn. Abiding in the un-abiding. The instructions for liberation from that are all those taught above. First, differentiate samsara and nirvana. Second, cut through solidity, skillfully decide on the meaning. Finally, in the meaning of leap-over, without distraction, cultivate, and the four visions reach their limit. Exhaustion of phenomena, transcendence of mind, and realization. Cutting the thread of what is to be known. The illusory body vanishes without remainder, and so forth. As it is said in the tantras: Cut the thread in the bardo of the place of birth. Thus it is said. The instructions for the bardo of the place of birth are the pointing out of the boundary. Samaya! Gya gya gya! The bardo of the suffering of dying is: As it is said in the tantras: At the time of dying, when it is not clear, re-establish clarity. Thus it is said. Seductive woman.

The instruction like looking at the void: First, the yogis who diligently practice the profound emptiness, observe the outer, inner, and secret signs of death as instructions. Outwardly, accumulate merit; inwardly, practice dependent origination; secretly, deceive death by practicing longevity methods. If that doesn't deceive it, then there are very secret signs of death: Earth dissolving into earth, the four limbs of the body fall powerless to the ground, unable to rise, inner consciousness becomes faint, or feels "I want to pull upwards"; water dissolving into water, liquid flows from the mouth and nose, followed by intense thirst, inner consciousness becomes dazed, the mouth is dry and craves water; fire dissolving into fire, warmth dissipates from the four limbs, warmth dissipates from between the eyebrows, inner consciousness turns dark; wind dissolving into wind, breathing becomes rough and rapid, inner consciousness becomes hazy. Then, as a sign of wind dissolving into consciousness: the outer breath suddenly stops, while the inner breath remains, it is best if there is a special friend or a lama, gather those who possess samaya.
