If the wick is made of cloth, the flame is unstable, so it is uncertain. If it is dirty, it is unclear, so it is uncertain. If there is resin on the tree, it is difficult to burn, so it is uncertain. These and other things should be carefully examined for various faults, and then carefully observed. Among the nine types of butter lamps, it is said: A thin, white, and swaying flame is a sign of obtaining an imperishable victory banner. A white and stable flame with a round tip is a sign of obtaining an unchanging Yungdrung. A clear flame shaped like a victory banner is a sign of having wealth and auspiciousness. A white, stable, and swaying flame is a sign of turning the wheel of Dharma. If spots appear on the butter and a lotus forms, it is a sign of increasing life and merit. Conversely, if the smoke is large and unclear, it is a sign of great afflictions and obscurations. If it crackles and sparks fly, there will eventually be enemies and obstacles.
