A human voice suddenly spoke: To all the eight classes of gods and demons, I have been offered as a substitute for humans. Please exchange humans for the substitute. As soon as these words were spoken, the eight classes of gods and demons said: The teacher Garab (dga' rab) is very kind, humans and substitutes can be exchanged. The eight classes of gods and demons rejoiced and departed. Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ，hum，Hūṃ): Whose substitute was it in the past? It was the substitute of King Ashoka (a shO ka). Because he committed deeds of uninterrupted sin, the Mamo (ma mo) eight classes of gods and demons became angry, and famine, war, and plague occurred. The teacher Rolang Dewa (ro langs bde ba) offered a body substitute and arranged a red Torma, offering it to the Mamo of sentient existence. Those killed, offered as a substitute for the body; those robbed, offered as compensation for wealth; those who cannot endure illness, offered as a substitute; those who cannot endure death, offered as a substitute. Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ，hum，Hūṃ): Whose substitute was it in the middle? It was the substitute of Emperor Trisong Detsen (khri srong lde'u btsan). Signs of the Mamo's anger appeared, and various inauspicious things occurred. The teacher Padmasambhava (pad+ma 'byung gnas) used the king's body as a measure, offered a body substitute, and arranged a red Torma, offering it to the Mamo of sentient existence. Those killed, offered as a substitute for the body; those robbed, offered as compensation for wealth; those who cannot endure illness, offered as a substitute; those who cannot endure death, offered as a substitute. Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ，hum，Hūṃ): Whose substitute is it today? For us, these people, wealth, and retinue, signs of the Dakinis' anger have appeared, and famine, war, and plague have occurred. I, this Vidyadhara mantra holder, offer a splendid body substitute adorned with silk and brocade, and a glorious Torma adorned with red, to the Mamo of sentient existence. Those killed, offered as a substitute for the body; those robbed, offered as compensation for wealth; those who cannot endure illness, offered as a substitute; those who cannot endure death, offered as a substitute. From the great mother Dakini five classes onwards, up to leprosy and the steadfast mother goddesses, a body substitute is offered, adorned with a red Torma, offered to the Mamo of sentient existence. Those killed, offered as a substitute for the body; those robbed, offered as compensation for wealth; those who cannot endure illness, offered as a substitute; those who cannot endure death, offered as a substitute. The eight classes of gods and demons of sentient existence, and the gods and spirits dwelling in the world, a body substitute is offered, adorned with a red Torma, offered to the gods and spirits of sentient existence. Those killed, offered as a substitute for the body; those robbed, offered as compensation for wealth; those who cannot endure illness, offered as a substitute; those who cannot endure death, offered as a substitute. May the Dakinis be pleased by the Torma! May the gods and spirits be pleased by the substitute!
