This is explained from the perspective of dedicating to enlightenment. From the excellent teachings of Master Nagarjuna, may all beings in the world, through whatever merit I have attained, which pervades all directions, and is as rare as an autumn star in the mind-sky stained blue by afflictions, or like a jewel on the hood of a mind-serpent entwined with afflictions and conceptual poison, realize that very truth and quickly go to the place of the Sugatas! May all beings in the world abiding in samsara, through whatever merit I, Chandrakirti, have attained from expounding the excellent teachings of Master Nagarjuna, the very truth of reality without distortion, realize the suchness of the two truths without distortion and quickly go to the place of the Sugatas! What kind of merit is it? It pervades all directions without exception and is unobstructed, and in the mind-sky stained deep blue by afflictions such as desire, it is as white as a spotless star in the autumn midnight sky, or like a precious jewel on the hood of a mind-serpent entwined with the poison of afflictions and concepts. All the treatises have been explained. In the lands of India, Nepal, and Tibet, although many scholars who speak the essential meaning of the sutras have appeared, most are only skilled in the meaning fabricated by conceptual thought, and are not truly versed in the actual meaning. Only the noble Nagarjuna can speak the Dharma without error, according to the Buddha's own intention. Only the glorious Chandrakirti can truly explain Nagarjuna's doctrine, which is as pure white as a lotus garden. Although many who claim to be wise say, "These teachers' views are like this," who can truly understand? Just as the blind cannot distinguish clear, colorful paintings, although I do not have the pure eye of the noble ones, through the blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, I have found this profound path of dependent arising. This is the path that pleases the Buddhas and their sons of the past, future, and present. I am certain that those who claim there is another path to liberation are talking nonsense. Even if the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions were to appear and unanimously say there is another path to liberation, my mind would not waver, friends! Therefore, those

Having abandoned my wrong path, if you wish to enter the path that pleases the Sugatas, even with hundreds of thousands of difficulties and efforts, you should enter this excellent system of Nagarjuna. If you do not understand this, even if you study many scriptures, there is no other way to realize the intention of the Sugatas. For the most part, it only spreads the net of conceptualization, and only obtains the labor of intelligence. Therefore, in order to refresh my own memory, and also to benefit other fortunate ones, and also to make the teaching of the Sage last long, I will explain this path of the Buddhas of the three times. Whatever merit is gained by striving here with pure intention, may it, like the light of the autumn moon, be extremely white and immaculate, eliminate the suffering of all beings, and make the garden of the Sage's teachings flourish. May I, in all my future lives, always dwell on the summit of the snow mountain of the Sage's teachings, be adorned with the burden of the three trainings, and roar the roar of the lion of emptiness. On the steep mountain of eternalism and nihilism, those who have long dwelt and have the stain of clinging to views, may I become the lion of speech who frightens them even by seeing or hearing their name. May I always be a renunciate, endowed with the fragrant scent of pure morality, and with the unobstructed courage of not looking to others, may I uphold the true Dharma of the Buddhas. This commentary on the Madhyamakavatara, called "The Lamp that Clarifies Reality," was composed by the Shakya monk Zhonnu Lodro, who understood the intention of all the Sugata's scriptures as the Middle Way free from all extremes, at the great Sakya Monastery. May this benefit the teachings and many sentient beings! Briefly explaining the necessity of the treatise.
