Explaining the two types of selflessness. Explaining the two types of selflessness. Having extensively explained the two types of selflessness, wishing to briefly show the distinctions, it is said: This selflessness is for the sake of liberating beings, it is taught as two types, distinguished by phenomena and individuals. This selflessness, in brief, is taught as two types, distinguished by the selflessness of phenomena and the selflessness of individuals. Why are the two types of selflessness taught? It is to liberate sentient beings from the afflictive obscurations and the obscurations to knowledge. Thus, for the sake of liberating the Hearers and Solitary Realizers from the afflictive obscurations, the selflessness of individuals is taught. For the sake of liberating the Mahayana practitioners from the obscurations to knowledge, the selflessness of phenomena is taught. If it is said that Hearers and Solitary Realizers also have realization of the selflessness of phenomena, why is only the selflessness of individuals taught to them? It is true, but they do not focus on knowing knowable objects, so they do not fully cultivate the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, the selflessness of phenomena is not extensively taught to them. However, seeking liberation, they have the complete cultivation of the selflessness of individuals, which is the means to abandon the afflictions of the three realms. Therefore, only the selflessness of individuals is taught. Even so, the realization of the selflessness of individuals depends on the realization that the aggregates are without inherent existence, so it is not that there is no realization of the selflessness of phenomena. Thus, the Teacher again said: These two, for the sake of training disciples, are divided and taught in many ways. These two types of selflessness are taught by the Bhagavan in many ways, according to the inclinations of the disciples. How are they divided? Emptiness with elaborations, having explained sixteen emptinesses, and then summarized, again explained as four emptinesses, these are also accepted in the Great Vehicle. As it is said in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: "Subhuti, furthermore, the Great Vehicle of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is as follows: inner emptiness, outer emptiness, inner-outer emptiness, emptiness of emptiness, great emptiness, ultimate emptiness, conditioned emptiness, unconditioned emptiness, past emptiness, future emptiness, present emptiness, emptiness without dispersion, emptiness without abandonment, emptiness of nature, emptiness of all dharmas, emptiness of self-nature." Thus it is said.

The emptiness of boundaries, the emptiness of transcendence, the emptiness of beginningless and endless, the emptiness of non-abandonment, the emptiness of self-nature, the emptiness of all dharmas, the emptiness of self-characteristics, the emptiness of non-apprehension, and the emptiness of the nature of non-things. Thus, the sixteen emptinesses are explained in detail. Furthermore, Subhuti, things are empty of things. Non-things are empty of non-things. Self-nature is empty of self-nature. Other things are empty of other things. Thus, it is summarized and the four emptinesses are explained again. These emptinesses are also called the Great Vehicle, because they extensively demonstrate the selflessness of phenomena as an antidote to the obscurations of knowledge. To explain each of the sixteen emptinesses individually, it is said: Because that is its own nature, therefore the eye is empty of the eye. Likewise, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind should also be stated. Because it is not permanent, nor is it of a destructive nature. Whatever is the naturelessness of the six, eye, etc., that is considered the inner emptiness. Among them, the space from the eye to the mind is called the inner dharma. If they also had a little self-nature, they would become either permanently abiding, which is indestructible, or impermanent, which is destroyed in an instant and continuously, because there is no other form for things. They are dependently originated, merely imputed, and have no self-nature at all, so they are not permanent, which is abiding, nor are they impermanent, which is destroyed in an instant and continuously, so the six inner sense bases, such as the eye, are from the beginning empty of their own essence, and that naturelessness is considered inner emptiness. Why are these, such as the eye, without self-nature? Because the self-nature of these, such as the eye, is emptiness itself. Here, the emptiness of the eye, etc., is not the absence of things, like a hammer breaking a vase, nor is it the absence of other things to be refuted, like a valley empty of water. The nature of refutation
