A Special Analysis of Cause and Effect. A Special Analysis of Cause and Effect. Secondly, in the special analysis of cause and effect, there are two parts: the explanation of the mutual dependence of cause and effect, and the refutation of examining contact and non-contact. The first part is: If a cause produces what is to be produced, then it is a cause. If it does not produce a result, then it will not become a cause. The result also arises because there is a cause, so arising occurs. What changes from what, and what changes from what before, please say. If it is thought that the seed, which is considered the cause, can produce what is to be produced—the sprout, then the seed is the cause. If it does not produce that result, then the name "cause" will disappear, because the reason for assigning the name "cause" will become causeless. The result, which is the sprout, also arises because there is a cause—the seed, so cause and effect are not inherently existent. If it is thought that they are inherently established, then which, cause or effect, is established first, and which, cause or effect, is produced later, which will be established? Which is stable, and which is the basis that is established first, must be said. But that is impossible, therefore, calling them cause and effect should also be understood as being established dependently, like the chariot's parts. The second part is divided into two parts: the abandonment of facts and similarities. The first part is: If you think that the cause produces the effect through contact, then, because the abilities are the same, there will be no difference between cause and effect. If there is no contact, then there will be no difference between cause and non-cause. Abandoning these two situations, other views will not exist. If, according to your view, cause and effect are inherently established, then is it produced through contact, or is it produced without contact? If the cause produces the effect through contact, just as there is no difference between the contact of a river and the ocean, because the abilities are the same, the distinction of "this is the cause, this is the effect" will disappear. If it is produced without contact, then just as other non-contacting effects do not arise, the effect that is thought of will also not arise. Or, cause and non-cause will both produce effect and non-effect, because non-contact is the same. Therefore, between cause and non-cause

it will become indistinguishable. For those who claim that cause and effect are established by their own nature, there is no other third conceptualization after abandoning these two conceptualizations of being in contact and not being in contact. Therefore, a cause established by its own nature does not produce an effect. Therefore, if the cause does not produce the effect, because there is no effect, then the cause that is separated from the effect will become causeless, or unwilling to become causeless. If the cause does not produce the effect, because there is no effect, the cause that is separated from the effect will become the causeless cause to which the name of cause is applied, because the application of the name of cause depends on the effect. Or, it is unwilling for the cause to become causeless, therefore, cause and effect are not self-existent. What are cause and effect like in your system? Because these two are like illusions, therefore, I have no fault, and worldly things also exist. For those who claim that cause and effect are established by their own nature, the aforementioned examination will arise. According to their view, things are produced by false imputation, and are like illusions without self-nature. Even without self-nature, they become objects of conceptualization like the hair seen by those with blurred vision. There is nothing to examine in this case. Therefore, for the Madhyamikas, there is no fault in examining whether cause and effect are in contact or not in contact, and worldly things that are established without examination also exist, so everything is established. Second, refuting similarities. First, stating the similarities: It is said that does the cause arise in contact with the effect? Or does it arise without contact? Whatever is said in this way, this refutation and examination are the same for you. How are they the same? Does this refutation refute the object to be refuted in contact? Or does it refute without contact? Is this fault the same for you? Abandoning these two conceptualizations, there is no other conceptualization. Do you Madhyamikas use refutation to refute the self-existence of cause and effect? Does this refutation agree with what is being refuted? Or does it refute without agreeing? If you examine it in this way, will the aforementioned fault arise for you? Abandoning these two conceptualizations, there is no conceptualization of refutation refuting what is to be refuted.
