It is accepted that things arise, but even in name, the four extremes of arising are not accepted, because the four extremes of arising are not compatible with dependent origination, and to deviate from dependent origination is not the way of the Madhyamikas. Why are the four extremes of arising not compatible with dependent origination? Because a cause that is without cause is not dependent on anything, and dependent origination is the meaning of dependence, therefore it is not compatible with dependent origination. If the cause and effect are different, like a pillar and a vase at the same time, they are not mutually dependent; if they are the same, they are not dependent on it; and if they are both, they will become the fault of both, so the arising from self, other, and both is not the reason for dependent origination. Therefore, whatever arises in dependence on something is not the same as that thing or something else. As the treatise also says: "That which arises in dependence on something, that is not that thing for a while, nor is it different from that thing, therefore it is neither annihilation nor permanence." This is what is said. Secondly, the benefit of dependent origination is: When dependent origination is explained in terms of just this condition, not only does it dispel the thoughts of arising from no cause, but also, because things arise in dependence, these thoughts cannot be examined. Therefore, this reasoning of dependent origination cuts off all nets of wrong views. Because things arise in dependence on this, just this reasoning can obtain the existence of my things, but not otherwise. The thoughts of permanence and annihilation, things and non-things, both, etc., cannot be examined, therefore, dependent origination, just this reasoning of condition, cuts off all nets of wrong views that cling to extremes. That is, in this way, this arises in dependence on this, and by accepting dependent origination as just this condition, no self-nature is accepted for any thing, because if there is self-nature, it does not depend on others, therefore it is not compatible with dependent origination. Therefore, it is also said in the sutras: "Whatever is born from conditions is not born."

Yes. Therefore, it does not have the nature of being born. Whatever depends on conditions is said to be emptiness. Whoever understands emptiness is a mindful person. Thus it is said. And in the treatise it is also said: Whatever arises in dependence on this and that, is not born from its own nature. Whatever is not born from its own nature, how can it be called born? Thus it is said. Whatever arises dependently, that is said to be emptiness. It is a designation made by cause, that itself is the Middle Way. Thus it is said. Therefore, when not even a little bit of self-nature is accepted, then it is not possible to examine any extreme. For example: If thoughts exist in things, there will be change, how things do not exist has already been fully examined. Without things, these do not arise, for example, just as there is no fire without firewood. If things have some self-nature, then their arising either comes from their own essence, or changes from self and other, or both, or from Ishvara (དབང་ཕྱུག་, 自在天) etc., and having been born, it remains and becomes permanent, and by destruction, it becomes subject to thoughts of annihilation, etc. How things do not have self-nature is as it has already been fully examined by reason, therefore, without things, these forms of clinging to extremes do not arise, for example, just as there is no fire without firewood. Fourth, explaining the necessity of analyzing with reason: Ordinary beings are bound by thoughts, non-thinking yogis become liberated, whatever is the cessation of thoughts, that is said by the wise to be the fruit of analysis. Because ordinary beings who do not understand such a nature of emptiness are bound by their own thoughts like the saliva of a worm, and yogis who, having understood such a nature, do not think in any extreme, become completely liberated. Whatever is the cessation of all clinging thoughts, that is established by the teacher as the fruit of analysis spoken of in the Madhyamaka treatise. It is also said in the Śataśāstra: If things exist by their own nature, then what is the merit of seeing emptiness? Seeing thoughts is bondage, that itself is cessation here. Thus it is said.
