The Middle Way View of Karma and Result The Middle Way View of Karma and Result Secondly, explaining the relationship between karma and result, wherein explaining the basis of karma and result is a meaning that needs to be made clear. The first point is that because there is no inherent existence in either of the two truths, not only is the fault of permanence and annihilation दूर (Sanskrit: dūra, Devanagari: दूर, Romanized: dūra, meaning: far away) avoided, but even without a basis for karma such as the ālaya-vijñāna, the relationship between karma and result is reasonable. For example, because it does not cease by its own nature, therefore even without the ālaya-vijñāna, this is possible. In some cases, even if the karma has ceased for a long time, understand that the result will still arise accurately. In response to the question, "How can the result arise from past karma that has ceased for a long time?" some believe that there is an ālaya-vijñāna that possesses the habitual tendencies of past karma. Some believe that there are other dharmas similar to promissory notes that do not disappear. Others believe that the stream of consciousness is continuously possessed by the habitual tendencies of karma. Here, because karma is not produced by its own nature, therefore it does not cease by its own nature. Since the arising of result from karma that has not ceased is not contradictory, therefore, even without a basis for karma and result such as the ālaya-vijñāna, the result of past karma is possible. In some times and places, even if the karma has ceased for a long time, understand that the arising of the ripened result is not contradictory. Therefore, it is said in the scriptures: Because karma is not produced, therefore it has no inherent existence. Because it is not produced, therefore it will not be wasted. As the meaning explained above, in order to demonstrate through analogy, it is said: After seeing objects in a dream, even when awake, desire arises in the foolish. Similarly, from karma that has ceased and is without inherent existence, there is still result. Thus it is said, in a dream, one sees and experiences desire with a beautiful woman of the land, and upon awakening, the woman in the dream does not actually exist and has ceased, but it still becomes the cause for the arising of desire in some fools. Similarly, from karma that has long ceased and is considered to be without inherent existence, there will also arise a ripened result.

Therefore, the arising of results exists. If it is thought that because karma has not ceased, therefore, the ripening will arise, then, just as with karma that has not produced a ripening, karma that has already produced a ripening will also produce a result, because it has not ceased? That is not the case, for example: Just as the object is equal in being non-existent, but a person with cataracts sees hair-like forms, but does not see other objects, similarly, know that a ripened karma does not ripen again. Just as the object, such as hair-like forms and rabbit horns, is equal in being non-existent, but an eye obscured by cataracts sees the appearance of hair-like forms in the sky, etc., but does not see the appearance of other objects such as rabbit horns, similarly, although karmas that have already produced a ripening and those that have not are equal in being unceasing and without inherent existence, the karma that has not previously produced a result will again produce a ripening, but know that from the karma that has already ripened a result, a result will not ripen again. Not only from the example just given is it certain that karmas that have produced a result and those that have not will again produce a ripening and not produce a ripening, but it is also certain that the ripenings of virtue and non-virtue are distinct. For example: Therefore, it is seen that the non-virtuous ripening comes from black karma, and the virtuous ripening comes from virtuous karma. Without virtue and non-virtue, the mindless one is liberated, therefore, attachment to karmic results should be rejected. Since hair-like forms, etc., are without inherent existence, but a definite appearance is seen, therefore, although virtuous and non-virtuous karmas are without inherent existence, the non-virtuous ripening, the unpleasant result, comes from black karma, that is, non-virtuous karma, and not from virtuous karma. And the virtuous ripening, the pleasant result, is seen to come from virtuous karma, and not from non-virtuous karma. Any wise person who is without attachment to both virtuous and non-virtuous karmas, because they are both without inherent existence, will be liberated. Therefore, because it is very difficult to understand how karmas without inherent existence produce results and how ripenings are definite, if ordinary people do not understand these things and slander karmic results, the Blessed One, seeing that conventional truth would be destroyed, proclaimed that the ripening of the results of karmas is inconceivable.
