And abiding in the human realm, if these individuals guard their precepts at that time, and do not allow themselves to fall into the lower realms, then just as a hero is bound by iron chains and abandoned in a great mountain cave, they will fall into the abyss of the three lower realms, and be controlled by karma and intense afflictions. At that time, how will they be able to escape from that terrifying abyss? Therefore, the Victorious One, having spoken of generosity, also spoke of following the precepts. For what reason is this so? Therefore, the Victorious One, who has vanquished all sinful dharmas, first spoke words praising generosity to those to be tamed, and then, in order to prevent the virtues of generosity and the like from being wasted, spoke words praising the precepts. The reason for this is that when merit increases in the field of precepts, the enjoyment of the fruits will never cease. Because precepts are the basis of all virtues, and relying on them, all virtues such as generosity increase, then the lineage of cause and effect, from higher to higher, will not be interrupted in sequence, so that the great accumulation of fruits will be enjoyed for a long time without interruption. Therefore, whether it be ordinary individuals, hearers, solitary realizers, or bodhisattvas, the cause of their higher realms and definite goodness is none other than precepts. Ordinary individuals, hearers born from the words of the Sage, solitary realizers, and bodhisattvas, the cause of their higher realms, the cause of the happiness of samsara, and definite goodness, the cause of liberation, which is neither happiness nor suffering in nature, is the precepts of the nature of the ten virtuous paths, and there is no other. In this way, if one practices small, medium, and great non-virtuous actions that are contrary, then one will experience the ripening results in the realms of pretas, animals, and hells. And as its antidote, if one practices the ten virtuous paths in a small way, then one will attain the status of gods and humans, and holding it with a mind that is sure to emerge from the three realms, if one practices the ten virtuous paths in a medium way, then one will attain the enlightenment of hearers and solitary realizers.

Ah! By being completely embraced by great compassion and practicing extensively, one will attain unsurpassed enlightenment. Secondly, showing that the Bodhisattva's precepts do not associate with opposing factors: Just as the ocean does not coexist with rottenness, Just as auspiciousness does not coexist with a black nose. Thus, the great being who is master of discipline, Does not wish to dwell with the immoral. Just as the ocean does not dwell with rottenness, and auspicious qualities do not dwell with a black nose. As mentioned above, thus, the great being who is master of pure discipline, dwelling on the second ground, does not wish to dwell with the precepts of the immoral. Thirdly, showing the distinction between worldly and transcendental precepts: Whoever abandons what, to whom, If there is attachment to the three, then that discipline, Is said to be the worldly perfection. The actor, by what, abandons what action such as killing, to what sentient being as the basis of action, if there is attachment to the three, then that discipline is said to be the worldly perfection. Empty of attachment to the three, it is transcendental. That discipline is seized by the perfection of wisdom, being empty of attachment to these three, and being free from manifest clinging, it is called the transcendental perfection. Stating the qualities of the ground and concluding: Not existence, but the splendor of existence, the Buddha-son, Born from the moon, stainless, immaculate, This also, like the autumn moonlight, Is what eliminates the suffering of beings' minds. This is not included in samsara, therefore not existence, because all qualities follow it, and because it is the cause of the complete dominion of the four continents, it becomes the splendor of existence, the Buddha-son dwelling on the second ground, born from the moon, the immaculate one who is free from the defilements of the opposing factors of the ten virtuous paths, is called this ground. Just as the light of the autumn moon, by being stainless, eliminates the suffering of beings, so too, it eliminates the suffering of the minds of beings caused by immoral discipline.
