Explanation of Chapter Two. Explanation of Chapter Two. Now, the second Bodhisattva's generation of mind, the Stainless, will be explained. It is to be understood through three points: thus, to show the essence of the ground through the gate of completely pure morality; incidentally, to show the praise of morality; and to conclude by stating the qualities of the ground. Regarding the first point, it is prayed: Because it is endowed with perfect morality and pure qualities, even in dreams, it abandons the defilement of immoral conduct. Etc. The Bodhisattva who abides in the second generation of mind, because of the perfection of morality, is fully endowed with the qualities of his own ground, so even in the state of dreams, he abandons and does not engage in the defilement of immoral conduct. What need is there to mention when he is awake? What is morality? Its essence is the seven abandonments, motivated by the three roots of virtue, such as non-attachment. Therefore, if it is accompanied by intention, it is established as the nature of the ten paths of action. Why is it called morality? Because it does not accept afflictions, does not generate sins, and cools the mind with non-agitation, or because it becomes the cause of happiness, it is to be relied upon by the noble ones, therefore it is called morality. Immoral conduct is the opposite of that, the ten paths of non-virtuous actions. Again, how is it that the Bodhisattva is completely pure in qualities due to the perfection of morality? Because the activities of body, speech, and mind are purified, he constantly accumulates the ten paths of action of the noble ones. This Bodhisattva who abides on the second ground, because the activities of body, speech, and mind have been purified from the defilements of the opposing side, constantly and spontaneously accumulates the ten virtuous paths of action relied upon by the noble ones, therefore he is perfect in morality. Therefore, in the Sutra of the Ten Grounds, it is said: O sons of the Victorious Ones, the Bodhisattva who abides on the Stainless Ground is by nature one who has abandoned killing, and so on, with right view, without deceit or deception, and with firm conviction in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, etc.
