Commentary on Chapter Sixteen. Commentary on Chapter Sixteen. Secondly, the necessity of explaining the fifteen chapters is: The necessity of the treatise is to lead sentient beings away from attachment to samsara and into nirvana. If the meaning of emptiness is not ascertained as it is, then no one can abandon attachment to samsara and generate joy in nirvana. That all dharmas are empty of inherent existence is also controlled by the net of strong attachment to self and what belongs to self by beings. Those who do not have learning are very frightened, so just as the wise inform the king that the queen has died in an obscure way, wise people should gradually guide them with some reasoning. For the inverted world that clings to self and what belongs to self, seeing emptiness in things that are impermanent, etc., becomes an obstacle. Therefore, it is necessary to ascertain the four inversions such as permanence, and beings only realize what is not empty. Therefore, in order to refute the view that is not emptiness, the first four chapters were written. In this way, after eliminating the four inversions, it is certain that conditioned things are impermanent, etc. When great compassion arises for sentient beings who are immersed in samsara, which is characterized by impermanence and suffering, and when the mind of enlightenment arises with the desire to liberate them, it is necessary to practice the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Therefore, the fifth chapter is written to explain the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Defilements are an obstacle to the practice of Bodhisattvas, so the sixth chapter is written to explain the method of eliminating them. In order to establish disciples in nirvana, it is necessary to abandon samsara. This must also be abandoned by abandoning the cause of samsara. Therefore, the seventh chapter is written to explain the method of abandoning karma. In order to make disciples suitable vessels for profound Dharma, the method of taming the minds of disciples is explained, which is the eighth chapter. In this way, after the mindstream is completely purified, in order to be suitable vessels for profound Dharma, and in order to generate true wisdom, the remaining chapters are written with the intention of establishing that all dharmas are empty of inherent existence. Therefore.

Since it is so, even though things are devoid of their own nature, due to some causes such as clinging to permanence, things that are empty in their own nature also appear as if they are not empty. For these causes of reversal, all fifteen distinctions must be individually refuted. Third, abandoning the remaining arguments of the bad opponent: refuting the reasoning that refutes emptiness, refuting attachment to extremes, showing that the reasoning of existence and non-existence are the same, refuting turning to the side of non-existence, refuting the metaphors and reasons for establishing emptiness, explaining the necessity of showing emptiness, showing that clinging to existence and non-existence is wrong, and cannot be refuted by reasoning that is free from extremes. First, one cannot refute the other side, one cannot establish one's own side, and three types of refuting other reasonings. The first is: If one composes distinctions for the sake of such a necessary meaning, then by that alone it can be established that all phenomena are not empty. Like this, when the debater of distinctions, you, exist, and the meaning to be expressed, which is shown by the fifteen distinctions, and the word "also," although your language shows the meaning of emptiness, when it exists, everything is established, so it cannot be said to be emptiness. If you say that, it is unreasonable, just as we rely on language and what is to be expressed to establish the debater, not without speaking. Similarly, language and what is to be expressed also rely on two other things to be established. Therefore, whatever arises in dependence is not inherently existent, so the debater, what is to be expressed, and language, these three, also do not have inherent existence. Therefore, the emptiness of inherent nature is established, and there is no fault. If all of this is empty, then at that time, the senses and objects will all disappear, becoming like the horns of a donkey. If the fault of emptiness as mentioned above can establish non-emptiness, then if the goer is not empty, then because the nature does not change, it will always exist, therefore it will become permanent, unborn, and unceasing. Therefore, the fault of non-emptiness as shown above cannot establish emptiness either. The second is divided into two: eliminating faults and refuting, the first is: merely dispelling the saying of emptiness.
