At that time of the teaching, what would the deceptive nature of conditioned phenomena deceive, in the manner of having existed before and then disappearing? Since nothing has become non-existent, your accusation is unreasonable. If the view of non-existence of things is not shown here either, then what does this scripture show? The Blessed One said this: By fully showing emptiness. What the Blessed One said about conditioned phenomena being false and having the nature of deception is not showing the non-existence of things, but fully showing emptiness, which is unborn by nature. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Naga King Anavatapta: Whatever is born from cause and condition is not truly born. It does not have the nature of being born. Whatever depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness is mindful. As it is said. Second, there are two parts to refuting the debate on the meaning of the scripture. First, presenting the debate: Things are without inherent existence, because they appear to change. The scripture says, 'Conditioned phenomena are false and have the nature of deception,' which does not clarify that things are not born of their own nature, but that things are without inherent existence, that is, they do not exist by their own nature, and it shows their destruction. Why is this? If things had their own nature, then these things would not be observed to change, because things appear to change in different states. Therefore, not existing by their own nature is the meaning of the scripture. Therefore, it is also like this, things are not without inherent existence. Because the phenomena that depend on things are emptiness. Like this, things are not without inherent existence, because the phenomena that depend on things are called emptiness, which is accepted. Without a phenomenon, then the phenomenon that depends on it is also unreasonable, therefore things exist by their own nature. Also, if there is no inherent existence, then whose is the change? If things do not have inherent existence, then which phenomenon has the characteristic of complete change? This is what people of their own sect say. Second, refuting it: Refuting the complete change of things, emptiness.

The first of the two ways to refute inherent existence is: If there were inherent existence, how could it change? Whatever does not confuse with anything, that is called its inherent nature. For example, heat does not confuse with fire, so it is known in the world as the inherent nature of fire. Therefore, inherent nature must be non-confusing. Therefore, if things had even a little bit of inherent nature, it would not be confusing, so how could it change? Just as fire does not become cold. These things are also observed to change, therefore things do not have inherent nature. Furthermore, it is impossible for things to have inherent nature by what is observed to change. Like this: It itself does not have other changes, and other things themselves do not have changes. Because the young do not age, because aging does not age either. For the time being, things remain in their previous state, and it itself will not have other changes. Because the young who remain in the state of youth do not age, they do not become the state of aging. Like this, because the state of aging has not been obtained, it is called youth, and these two states are contradictory. Even if other states are obtained, there will be no other changes. Because aging does not age either, aging does not need to be related to aging again. Furthermore, if it itself changes, then milk itself will become yogurt. If the previous state itself changes, then will milk itself become yogurt? The statement that milk itself becomes yogurt is unreasonable because they are contradictory. If it is said that the state of milk is abandoned and becomes the state of yogurt, then what other thing besides milk will become the entity of yogurt? If milk does not become yogurt, then what other thing besides milk, such as earth, water, etc., will become the entity of yogurt? Therefore, saying that other things will become the entity of yogurt is irrelevant. Therefore, because there is change, things do not have inherent nature from the appearance of phenomena. The second is: It is also unreasonable to say that things that are the basis of emptiness have inherent nature. Like this:
