Explanation of Chapter Thirteen. Explanation of Chapter Thirteen. Thirteenth, in the chapter on examining formations, establishing the emptiness of formations through scriptural authority. The meaning of that scriptural authority is divided into debate and refutation, the first of which is: The Blessed One said, 'Whatever dharma deceives is false.' All formations are of the nature of deception, therefore they are false. The eye of wisdom does not obscure the nature of all dharmas, having uprooted all traces of ignorance. For the sake of protecting sentient beings who are inverted by the four inversions and have no refuge, diligently showing the non-inverted nature of no self-nature, the Buddha, the Blessed One, possessing great compassion, said: Bhikshus, whatever compounded dharma is of the nature of deception is false, and whatever dharma does not deceive, Nirvana, is the ultimate truth. This is of the nature of deception. This is of the nature of destruction. Thus, whatever dharma is said to be of the nature of deception and destruction is false. Why? All formations, as previously explained, do not arise from self, other, both, or without cause. There is no other aspect that can produce them, so although they have become without self-nature, due to the dimness of ignorance, those whose eyes of wisdom are impaired still appear as the nature of arising. Just as illusory horses and elephants deceive those who do not recognize them, so too these formations are of the nature of deceiving the immature. Therefore, these formations, like mirages, are of the nature of falsehood. Whatever is true is not of the nature of deception, like Nirvana. Therefore, as shown by the scriptural authority and reasoning, phenomena are established as being without self-nature. As it says in the Prajnaparamita Sutra: All dharmas are empty, in the manner of being without self-nature. If, in this way, all formations are shown to be false by the very nature of deception, then all things will not exist, and it will become a nihilistic wrong view. If it is said: If whatever is a deceptive dharma is false, then what does it deceive? When we say that whatever is a deceptive dharma is false,
