Rest. Not existent. Thus, since there is no seer, the seen and seeing are also non-existent, as has already been said. Therefore, the four, such as consciousness, which are the cause of that, are not existent. Are consciousness, etc., existent because their results, the four from grasping to old age and death, are existent? Grasping, etc. How can they exist? When the four, such as consciousness, are non-existent because the seen and seeing are non-existent, how can their results, the four such as grasping, exist? They are only non-existent. Secondly, comparing that principle to other senses: Because of seeing, hearing and smelling, tasting, acting, and touching, mind, the hearer and what is heard, etc., should be known as distinctively explained. Hearing, its own nature, is not the nature of a hearer. If one does not listen to oneself, how does one listen to others? For the sake of thoroughly establishing hearing, the example of fire is not effective. Because of obstructing what has gone and what has not gone, it is a reply with hearing. All such things should be explained by connecting them with the mind. Those senses, such as the eye, are also not truly objects of forms, etc. Thus, the Bhagavan also said: The eye does not see forms, the mind does not know dharmas, where the world does not enter, this is the best of truth. Thus, etc., it is said. In the Treatise on the Root of the Middle Way, the examination of the senses is the explanation of the third chapter. Explanation of Chapter Three.
