f it is different, then it is another consciousness that sees form, and what does it have to do with the eye? Fourth, refuting with analogies: If you say that just as the image of a face appears in a mirror, the image of form appears in the eye, and therefore it can see form, then you must ask, is the image the same as or different from the eye? If it is the same, then seeing form is seeing the eye. If it is different, then it is seeing another image, and what does it have to do with the eye? Furthermore, just as the image of a face appears in a mirror, images should also appear on walls and pots and so on. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that the eye can see form. Second, refuting the seer: If you say that the eye does not see form, but there is a seer who relies on the eye to see form, then you must ask, is the seer the same as or different from the eye? If it is the same, then it is the eye that sees. If it is different, then it is another seer who sees form, and what does it have to do with the eye? Furthermore, does the seer rely on the eye to see form or not? If not, then it is unreasonable to say that he relies on the eye to see form. If he sees, then it is the eye that sees form. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that there is a seer who sees form. Third, refuting the object of seeing and the result of seeing: The result of the connection between the eye and form is the arising of consciousness, and consciousness can see form. If you say so, then you must ask, is consciousness the same as or different from the eye? If it is the same, then it is the eye that sees form. If it is different, then it is another consciousness that sees form, and what does it have to do with the eye? Furthermore, does consciousness rely on the eye to see form or not? If not, then it is unreasonable to say that it relies on the eye to see form. If it sees, then it is the eye that sees form. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that the result of the connection between the eye and form is that consciousness sees form. Second, extending this reasoning to other faculties: This should be applied similarly to the ear and so on." } ] ============================================================

If it is not pure self-nature, the example of fire is ineffective in order to strongly establish (your) view. The example of fire that you set up to strongly establish only your own view cannot establish the actual meaning. Because, gone, not gone, and going, with these observed ways, the answer has been given, and the example of fire is refuted together with the view that includes the actual meaning. By what is it refuted? It is refuted by the reason previously shown that there is no way to go on the path of gone, not gone, and going. Just as it is said: The one who has temporarily gone does not go, similarly, the one who has temporarily burned does not burn, and the one who has not burned does not burn either. Apart from the burned and the unburned, the state of burning cannot be understood. And, the one who has temporarily seen does not see, and the one who has not seen does not see either. Apart from the seen and the unseen, the act of seeing cannot be understood. It should be said like this. Again, just as it is said: The one who is temporarily going does not go, similarly, the one who is temporarily burning does not burn, the non-burner is not burning. Apart from the burner and the non-burner, who will be burned as the third? And, the one who is temporarily seeing does not see, the non-seer is not seeing either. Apart from the seer and the non-seer, who will be seen as the third? These should be recited and refuted. Third, summarizing the meaning: When one does not see even a little, it is not seeing. Because it is said to be seeing only after seeing, how is this reasonable? When the eye, in the manner described above, does not see even a little of any self-nature, it is not truly seeing. Therefore, because it is said to be seeing only after seeing, how can the eye be reasonable? Just like a pillar and so on. Fourth, showing another way of refutation: Furthermore, if it is said that it is seeing because of seeing, then, is it related to the act of seeing and the seeing nature of the eye, or is it related to the non-seeing nature? Neither case is possible. Because, seeing is not seeing itself, and non-seeing is not seeing either. Although the (eye) with the nature of seeing has the act of seeing, it is not separate from seeing itself, because it would become two acts of seeing.

Moreover, the action will also become dualistic. That which does not have the nature of seeing is precisely not seeing, because it is separate from the act of seeing. Second, refuting the viewer: If it is said that there is an act of seeing, because there is a viewer. Then, it should be understood that by seeing itself, the viewer can also be distinguished. As previously stated: "The nature of seeing, for it, is not seeing." etc., by refuting seeing itself, it should also be understood that the viewer is distinguished. It should be said: "The viewer's own nature, for it, is not seeing. If one does not see oneself, then how does one see others?" etc. If it is said that there is a viewer, because there is his function and action, because there is the object to be seen and seeing. Then, the object to be seen and seeing are dependent on the viewer, but if analyzed, they do not exist. The viewer who has not abandoned is non-existent, even if seeing is abandoned. If a viewer exists, then will it become dependent on seeing, or independent of seeing? The one who has not abandoned seeing, for the viewer dependent on seeing is non-existent, because whether the viewer is established or not, it should not depend on seeing, because the established does not need to depend, and the unestablished, like the son of a barren woman, should not depend. The viewer who has abandoned seeing is also non-existent, because the actor is dependent on the action. Therefore, if there is no viewer, then where are the object to be seen and seeing? As previously stated, if there is no viewer, then where are the object to be seen and seeing that depend on it? Therefore, because of their existence, the viewer will not exist. Third, refuting the result of the act of seeing and the object to be seen: Just as father and mother, relying on this, it is said that a son is born. Similarly, relying on the eye and form, it is said that consciousness arises. Just as relying on father and mother, a son is born, relying on the seeing eye and the object to be seen, form, consciousness arises, from the aggregation of the three, contact arises, from contact, feeling arises, from feeling, craving arises. Thus, the four limbs of existence are all causes of the object to be seen and seeing, therefore, if it is said that the object to be seen and seeing both exist, then, because there is no object to be seen and seeing, consciousness etc.
