Collection of Instructions by Omniscient Pema Karpo PK301: The Garland of Holy Dharma, a Gradual Path of Dependent Arising. The Garland of Holy Dharma, a Gradual Path of Dependent Arising. The Dependent Arising that Generates the Qualities of Samadhi. The Garland of Holy Dharma, a Gradual Path of Dependent Arising. By what path are all dharmas seen? Leading all beings across the vast expanse, To the Lama of the Kagyu lineage who guides, I prostrate with an ocean of devotion. All phenomena are dependent arising, and nothing else. To ascertain this, there is the instruction of the Seven Generations, the stages of meditation, which are twofold: the dependent arising that generates the qualities of samadhi, and the dependent arising that perfects abilities in the post-meditation period. First, in a place that is delightful and pleasing, secluded from the thorns of mental wandering, abandon the causes that increase attachment, clinging, and craving for this life. Separated from the thieves of the five obscurations and the ten non-virtuous actions, sit on a comfortable seat in the vajra posture, with hands in the mudra of equipoise below the navel. Straighten the spine, push the shoulders back, slightly tuck the chin in, leave the tongue in its natural position, and gaze at the tip of the nose. With these points fulfilled, exhale once, and then without effort in breathing in or out, let the breath remain natural. From the very beginning, with the thought, 'For the sake of all sentient beings, may I attain perfect Buddhahood. For that purpose, I shall engage in profound yoga,' Upon a precious throne, on a lotus and moon cushion, visualize yourself as the perfectly enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni, with a body like refined gold, adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor signs of perfection. The two hands are in the earth-touching and equipoise mudras, wearing the three Dharma robes that are red like young clouds. Seated in the vajra posture, in the sky above your crown, visualize the root guru. Pray for blessings so that all appearances arise as dependent arising. Pray with intense longing. In front of you, at a distance of about one cubit, focus your eyes and mind single-pointedly on a clear and radiant moon mandala with a wheel of light rays. Do not think about the past, such as 'I did this before, and then this happened.' Do not think about the future, such as 'Now I will do this, and what will happen, or not happen.' Do not judge the present appearances as 'This is good, this is bad,' or 'This is right, this is wrong,' and do not analyze with discriminating mind. Do not intentionally think, 'It is like this.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do not meditate. Do not fall into the nihilistic view of 'nothingness' when contemplating emptiness. Do not meditate on emptiness constructed through concepts, nor on the self-proclaimed wisdom and general concepts. So how should one do it? Do not conceptualize anything, do not grasp anything. Abandon all thoughts and mental activities, maintain non-distraction, and rest the mind single-pointedly in its natural, unfabricated state. As 'The Protector of Beings, Tsangpa' (a disciple of Gampopa) said: 'If the mind is not fabricated, it is peaceful; if the water is not stirred, it is clear.' Ling Lama said: 'If left unfabricated like butter, realization will arise. If allowed to flow like a river, it will also arise. Completely abandon all aims and signs, yogi, and always rest in equanimity.' De-shek Khampa Chenpo (a Kagyu master) said in 'Introduction to Mahamudra': 'If you make meditation an object of meditation, it is artificial. So how should it be done? If you leave self-awareness unfabricated, without the imprints of thoughts, you will see yourself.' Saraha (an Indian Mahasiddha) said: 'Having completely abandoned all thoughts and objects of thought, like a child resting freely. If you diligently follow the guru's instructions, there is no doubt that co-emergent wisdom will arise.' Jampa Gonpo (Maitreya) said: 'Here, there is nothing to remove, and nothing to place. Look directly at reality, and seeing directly, you will be directly liberated.' The Perfection of Wisdom Sutra also says: 'If Bodhisattvas think that these aggregates are empty, they are practicing with signs and do not have faith in the unborn.' The 'Two Examinations Tantra' says: 'Because the mind does not meditate, all beings should be meditated upon.' Some say: The venerable Buddha said: 'With the spear of wisdom in emptiness, all views are shattered, Dingriwa.' Therefore, unexamined meditation is foolish meditation, and the realization of vipassanā (insight) will not arise. But this statement does not harm us, because if we explain the meaning of this statement, from the perspective of appearance, it is appearance, and searching for its reality, it cannot be found, which is emptiness, and the one who searches for it is called wisdom. This is different from the wisdom determined by study and reflection. The wisdom in this context refers to knowing all the sensations that arise from a state of non-distraction, and liberating them naturally at the moment of knowing, so it is called the spear of wisdom. At that time, the object of knowledge and the wisdom of the knower are not separate at all, so they are non-dual. The wisdom of the observer is not established in any way in terms of its essence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
