When you notice distraction, interrupt it and focus your attention on the previous object of meditation. By doing this repeatedly, a situation will arise where you cannot maintain focus, and one thought after another arises. If this makes you feel frustrated, realize that the previous effort to maintain focus has become a fault, now relax, and even if thoughts arise, do not block them, let them be in their natural state. When you become accustomed to letting them be in their natural state, the previous state of flow will disappear, and instead, a state of calm will arise, like a calm lake. Stay in this state for a moment, and then unknowingly you will begin to be distracted again. Distraction is the fault of relaxation. At that time, by alternating between these two methods in meditation, a balanced state will naturally be achieved. In this state, abide in a clear, non-distracted nature, without forgetting for even a moment, maintain mindfulness. Abide in this signless calm abiding (śamatha). By repeatedly abiding in calm abiding, it will naturally arise with attention, and this is the part of mindfulness or insight (vipaśyanā). When it becomes stable, and combined with calm abiding, by observing with insight, the view will become completely pure. At this time, by analyzing using the reasoning of the Madhyamaka school in the main practice and subsequent practice, various elaborations will be explained in detail, therefore, there is no other instruction besides this. Padma Karpo thus instructed the preacher of Jo Gdan. May all be auspicious! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
