Collection of Teachings by the Omniscient Pema Karpo, PK7: Explanation of Painted Images - Seeing is Meaningful 1-303 Explanation of Painted Images - Seeing is Meaningful Homage to the Lama and Protector Manjushri! First, recite the auspicious syllable OM, then place Vakkayedana (Tibetan: ཝཱ་ཀཀྱེ་དན་, Sanskrit Devanagari: वाक्कयेदान, Sanskrit Romanization: vākkye dāna, Literal Meaning: Speech Giving) on the crown of the head. With Namah (Tibetan: ན་མཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: नमः, Sanskrit Romanization: namaḥ, Literal Meaning: Homage), offering praise and the conduct of Samantabhadra, may good fortune be obtained through the movements of elaborate dance. Poets compare the coolness of moonlight to nectar, but eloquent speech is the companion of the youth of the wise. Realizing that excellent explanations are the source of nectar, I, the Joyful One, record this. Regarding the origin of painting the Buddha's image, the first instance was when King Rūparāja sent a Buddha image as a gift to King Udayana. At that time, practitioners could not satisfy their eyes by looking at the Buddha's body, and their eyes became like those of a drunkard. When the Buddha was by the water, his image appeared in the water, and this was used as a model for painting a water-damp painting. 1-304 The second instance is when the daughter of the King of Simhala (Sri Lanka) offered three large measures of pearl vines as a gift to the Buddha, and the Buddha returned the gift with a Thangka painted randomly on cloth, radiating light. This is the pure source. This painting became popular in Kashmir and the central regions. The third instance is when the Buddha was in the heavenly realm, King Udayana had already renounced the world. Because he missed the Buddha so much, he carved a sandalwood statue. When the Buddha descended from the heavens, this statue went to greet the Buddha. This statue, known as the Sandalwood Buddha, is still in China today. These are all Thangkas copied from the real body. In fact, even when the Buddha was alive, Buddha images were already circulating in various places. Later, due to regional differences, Nepalese and Chinese styles of painting also appeared in Tibet. One-twelfth, whether it is called 'half', 'with half', 'with one-twelfth', 'high', 'palm', or 'large portion', the meaning is the same. Later, knowledgeable people distinguished between the style of Kalachakra and the style of Utpattikrama, but in reality, there was not much difference. For example, in the Glorious Tantra, it says: 'The Lord of Victors, from the crown to the space between the eyebrows, becomes half a sun disc.' 'From there to the lotus of the throat, similarly the lotus of the heart and navel.' In the commentary, it says: 'Here, the Lord of Victors, the Bhagavan (Tibetan: བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས, Sanskrit Devanagari: भगवन्, Sanskrit Romanization: bhagavan, Literal Meaning: Blessed One) from the crown to the space between the eyebrows' refers to half the space between the eyebrows. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our sun temple is half of twelve fingers in size. Then, the lotus of the throat is also half of twelve fingers in size. The heart is also half of twelve fingers. Then, the navel lotus, which is the lotus of the navel, is half of twelve fingers. Similarly, the secret lotus is also half of twelve fingers. Therefore, from the crown of the head to the end of the secret lotus, sixty-two and a half fingers is the size of the body. In the 'Compendium of Sources,' it is said: 'The lines of Brahma and other forms are also the seat of the five elements.' The seat here means the cause, as explained by the Khenpos of the Tantra section, so according to the proportion of the seated image, from above the lotus moon to the crown of the head, it is divided into five equal parts. The body is divided into three parts, from the throat to the end of the secret, divided into three equal parts, one part of which is the size of the face. The face is made with equal parts, and the face is one-twelfth. ' Here, the half-finger width is not mentioned, it should be known that this is only the difference between whether the tantra is clear or not, in fact, it is needed. When writing, because the height of the lotus position will increase, so add that bulge, know that the bulge is the height of the secret place, so there is no need to calculate separately. According to the proportion of the standing image. In the 'Glorious Root Tantra,' it is said: 'Under the feet and the tibia, thighs and hips, and Manu, these are knowledge.' In the commentary, it is said: 'Under the feet is Manu, which is the change of fourteen fingers. The tibia is twenty-five fingers wide, and the thighs are the same. The height of the feet is knowledge, which is four and a half fingers. ' Similarly, the knee joint and the hips are also four fingers wide. Therefore, from the hips to the end of the sole of the foot is sixty-two and a half fingers. Therefore, more than one hundred and twenty-five fingers is the size of the Buddha image. There is a face size on the sole of the foot, which is two fingers wide, which is Manu. In the 'Compendium of Sources,' it is also said: 'At the junction of the thighs and tibia, there are four fingers wide, which is very suitable. The kneecap is four fingers wide, and the ankle is the same. ' In the 'Glorious Root Tantra,' it is said: 'Half of the chest plus half is the size of the sun temple, one's own arms and hands are the size of space, eyes, king, sun temple. ' In the commentary, it is said: 'Half of the chest plus half is the size of the sun temple, which is the size of twelve and a half fingers. One's own arms and hands are space' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
