Oh, Collection of Instructions by Khenpo Paden Dondrup, NPD9, titled 'Answers to Questions by Rabjam Kunga Tashi,' Fifth Chapter. Answers to Questions by Rabjam Kunga Tashi, Fifth Chapter. Answers to Questions by Rabjam Kunga Tashi, Fifth Chapter. Venerable One, you are pleased to hold the ocean of profound teachings. My first question is: In the context of the pure stage of Vajrayana, what exactly are the 'seven skins' referred to as the 'seven limbs of enlightenment skin'? Regarding this question, I have examined numerous commentaries from both India and Tibet, and I have found no mention of it among the hundreds of thousands of scholars, past and present, who have acknowledged this concept. My guru, Muspa Chenpo, once said, 'I have looked through both the Kangyur and Tengyur (藏文:བཀའ་བསྟན་འགྱུར།,the collected words of Buddha and commentaries), but I cannot find the meaning of this phrase anywhere else.' However, in the 'Eight Limbs' (梵文天城体:अष्टाङ्ग,梵文罗马拟音:Aṣṭāṅga,汉语字面意思:八支) by the scholar Śūra (梵文天城体:शूर,梵文罗马拟音:Śūra,汉语字面意思:勇士), it is mentioned 'blood-born seven skins,' and so on. Therefore, my guru said that these refer to the outer layers of the seven inner essences. After finding this reference, I examined the root text and commentary of the 'Eight Limbs' and became very convinced. It is as follows: 'In this way, the body is of the nature of elements, blood produces seven layers of skin, like cream from milk, it appears when ripe.' And in its commentary: 'For this body, seven layers of skin arise from blood.' Thus, the body, being of the nature of elements, has seven layers of inner skin. The ripening of the skin is also caused by the heat of each respective essence. As it says in the same text: 'When the body's essence remains, moist and warm, with its own heat, ripening naturally occurs.' The seven skins are the containers of the seven essences. What are these seven essences? The same text says: 'Those seven are seven places, first is blood, the others in order, phlegm undigested, bile digested, wind and urine are said to be the places.' And in its commentary: 'That is, the place of phlegm, the place of undigested matter, the place of bile, the place of digested matter, the place of wind, and the place of urine, these are the seven.' Therefore, the skins that are the containers of the seven essences, with blood as the first, are to be purified, and the means of purification are mindfulness and other limbs of enlightenment. Many people do not understand this and think that the prostrations and the skin of the upper and lower parts of the body are the outer seven skins. There is no scriptural basis for this from any Indian or Tibetan scholar; it is merely foolish talk and not worth repeating. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Second, regarding the question of which auspicious sentient beings mentioned in the Great Peacock Vidyārājñī Sūtra (from the five dhāraṇīs) are 'going' and 'not going': Generally, the meaning of 'going' and 'not going' can be explained by applying it to both body and mind. 1-221 However, the way of 'going' here is different from the above, referring to which type of sentient being has reached or not reached the place to experience the results of previous actions. Reaching is called 'going,' and not reaching is called 'not going.' Having determined this, it should be understood that 'not going' here refers to those in the intermediate state (antarābhava). The Abhidharmakośa states: 'Because they have not gone to the place of travel, the intermediate state arises.' The Tattvasiddhi-śāstra states: 'The four births encompass the five destinies, but the five destinies do not encompass the four births. What is not encompassed? The intermediate state.' The meaning of these words is: the spontaneously born gods and hell beings, these two types, and humans and animals are all included in the four births. Most pretas (hungry ghosts) are spontaneously born, and some are born from the womb. The Abhidharmakośa states: 'Humans and animals have four types, hell beings and gods are only spontaneously born, the intermediate state is also spontaneously born, and some pretas are born from the womb.' In short, because the intermediate state is not included in any of the six or five realms, it is called a 'not going' sentient being. But this does not mean that its body cannot move to other places. Third, regarding the meaning of the term 'སྐྱེ་རྒུ་ (skye rgu)' which appears in many scriptures: 1-222 According to the old dictionaries, the prefix 'ད་ (da)' removes the root 'གུ་ (gu),' and it is the same as the word 'དགུ་ (dgu, nine)' which means a number. For well-learned scholars, this will not cause confusion, but many ignorant people who pretend to be scholars think it is a number, and say that 'སྐྱེ་རྒུ་ (skye rgu)' refers to people who are born after nine months of pregnancy. The wise ones thought that such a statement would harm the Dharma, so Paṇḍita Translator Palden Lodrö Tenpa (པང་ལོ་ཙཱ་བ་དཔལ་ལྡན་བློ་གྲོས་བརྟན་པ་) thought that he did not understand that the meaning of this word is like 'འཁོར་གྱི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ཡོད་དགུར་ཡང་ ('khor gyi dkyil 'khor yod dgur yang, all saṃsāra and nirvāṇa),' which is a word that includes everything, but mistakenly thought it was the number 'nine,' which is a very serious mistake, so he ordered that in the future it should be written as 'རྒུ་ (rgu)' with 'ར་མགོ་ (ra mgo).' This is the good speech of the wise. Therefore, whether 'སྐྱེ་རྒུ་ (skye rgu)' is written like this, or written as 'དགུ་ (dgu, nine)' as before, it should be understood that it is a word that includes all, all, or all meanings. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- བཞི་
