Collected Teachings of Ngawang Kunga Sonam ANK47: 'A Clear Explanation of the Stages of Meditation on the Transference of Consciousness, Bestowing Bliss on All Beings' 4-650 'A Clear Explanation of the Stages of Meditation on the Transference of Consciousness, Bestowing Bliss on All Beings' The Teaching on the Lying Posture Transference of Amitabha (Tibetan: སྣང་བ་མཐའ་ཡས, Sanskrit Devanagari: अमिताभ, Sanskrit Romanization: Amitābha, Literal meaning: Immeasurable Light) from the Avatamsaka Sutra. 'A Clear Explanation of the Stages of Meditation on the Transference of Consciousness, Bestowing Bliss on All Beings' Namo Guru Buddha Dhvajaya (Tibetan: ན་མོ་གུ་རུ་བུདྡྷ་དྷྭ་ཛ་ཡ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: नमो गुरु बुद्ध ध्वजाय, Sanskrit Romanization: Namo guru buddha dhvajāya, Literal meaning: Homage to the Guru Buddha Banner). Respectfully bowing to the feet of the infallible Guru, For the sake of generating the splendor of mental ease for all beings, I write this clear explanation of the stages of the transference of consciousness, With pure intention and respectful action. Here, those who possess the fully endowed and free human body with eighteen qualities, as a basis for purification, and who are diligent, having entered the gate of either the Great or Small Vehicle and practiced the path, according to the differences in the Vehicle they enter and the diligence of the individuals who enter, the best will manifest the result in three lifetimes, or three countless eons, or in this lifetime. In any case, one should make this body meaningful for as long as it lasts, and at the time of death, generate special realization in one's own mind-stream through special instructions on dying, and for the sake of connecting future lives with higher realms and definite goodness, there are three instructions on the transference of consciousness: the lying posture transference of Amitabha (Tibetan: སྣང་བ་མཐའ་ཡས, Sanskrit Devanagari: अमिताभ, Sanskrit Romanization: Amitābha, Literal meaning: Immeasurable Light) from the Avatamsaka Sutra; the transference through the two aspects of Bodhicitta from the instructions of Mipham Rinpoche (Tibetan: མི་ཕམ་པ, Sanskrit Devanagari: मैत्रेय, Sanskrit Romanization: Maitreya, Literal meaning: Loving One); and the teaching on the transference of consciousness for those who have entered the gate of Highest Yoga Tantra. 4-651 Firstly, when a practitioner practices, whether or not they have entered the path, it should definitely be shown to someone who is dying. As for the time, it can be practiced at bedtime when one is currently in a state of well-being, or it can be done at the time of another's death. Now, the ritual for practicing at bedtime is as follows: when going to bed at night, lie down with the right side of the body underneath. Generate refuge and Bodhicitta, and think that this direction is the Sukhavati Pure Land (Tibetan: བདེ་བ་ཅན, Sanskrit Devanagari: सुखावती, Sanskrit Romanization: Sukhāvatī, Literal meaning: Land of Bliss), and visualize oneself as the Yidam. In the sky in front, on top of a lotus and moon, visualize the Bhagavan Amitabha (Tibetan: སྣང་བ་མཐའ་ཡས, Sanskrit Devanagari: अमिताभ, Sanskrit Romanization: Amitābha, Literal meaning: Immeasurable Light), with a red-colored body, one face, two arms in the gesture of meditative equipoise, holding a begging bowl filled with nectar, seated in the vajra posture, adorned with various jewels. Around him, visualize the lineage lamas seated. Outside of that, visualize Buddhas and Bodhisattvas surrounding him, and pay homage with the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and recite the branches from the 'King of Prayers'. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Or recite this verse composed by Chöjé Sakya Paṇḍita: 'The supreme lama who possesses the qualities, dwells as the essence of the Three Jewels. For all sentient beings, as the sole means, abiding like the sky, I supplicate. I prostrate to the Three Jewels, I take refuge in the Three Jewels, I offer to all of them completely, I confess all sins individually, I rejoice in all virtues, I request the turning of the Wheel of Dharma, I supplicate not to pass into sorrow. Having generated the mind of enlightenment, I also practice its conduct, may I quickly attain perfect Buddhahood.' Recite this three times. Then, as you exhale, visualize your mind dissolving into the hearts of the Victorious Ones, becoming inseparable from the heart of the Bhagavan. As you inhale, visualize light emanating from the hearts of the Victorious Ones, entering through your mouth and dissolving into your heart, visualizing the hearts of the Victorious Ones and your own mind as inseparable. Repeat this three times, and at the end, visualize the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas dissolving into the lama, the lama dissolving into Amitābha (Skt: Amitābha, Tib: སྣང་བ་མཐའ་ཡས, Romanization: Nangwa Taye, Literal meaning: Infinite Light), Amitābha dissolving into light and dissolving into yourself, and yourself also dissolving into light, visualizing the Buddha, the Yidam, and your own mind as inseparably mingled. Then make this aspiration: 'In that pure and joyful mandala of the Victorious Ones, may I be born from an exceedingly beautiful lotus, and in the presence of the Victorious One Amitābha, may I also receive the prophecy there.' Make this aspiration and fall asleep without letting your mind wander elsewhere. The benefit is: by doing so, in the next life, you will abandon this body like a snake shedding its skin, and be born miraculously from a lotus in the Western Pure Land, and listen to the Dharma from Amitābha, as stated in the *Heap of Jewels Sutra*. Doing this now, at bedtime, will make it a habit, and there will be no fault of short life. When you are about to die, or when someone else is about to die, to perform phowa (transference of consciousness), generate refuge and bodhicitta with three heartfelt convictions. In the sky in front of you, visualize Amitābha as described above. Make offerings as much as you can, such as prostrations and offerings of the verses 'Lord Who Guides the World', etc., this is the preparatory practice. In front of him, perform the ritual of confessing sins. Generate certainty that you will definitely be purified. Abandon all attachments in your mind, and it is extremely important to give up without regret anything that you might be attached to. Then, with a mind unafraid of death, as shown earlier, as you exhale, visualize being inseparable from the hearts of the Victorious Ones. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
