I take refuge in the Buddha, the supreme among all! I take refuge in the Dharma, the supreme among all those free from desire! I take refuge in the Sangha, the supreme among all assemblies! Please, Venerable Ones, accept me as a lay follower for as long as I live! Also, one should recite one's own mantra for one's own benefit, excluding others. It is said that this should be repeated three times. After saying, 'Please repeat the second time as well,' then, as before, say, 'Venerable Ones, please listen!' up to 'Please accept.' After the second time, this ritual has three parts: up to 'I take refuge in the Sangha' is taking refuge; 'I for as long as I live' is self-vow; 'Please accept' is requesting others. The self-vow is complete, and the phrase 'as a lay follower' is also complete. In order to ensure that you can definitely obtain the vows in your own mindstream, we also raise our voices and say 'as a lay follower.' The vows of a lay follower arise. We will become your teachers. Therefore, you should know that you have received the vows at that time, and having become a teacher, the teacher should say 'Please accept,' so keep that in mind, and say 'Please repeat the third time as well.' Once the third time is finished, the teacher says, 'This is the method.' The disciple says, 'Excellent!' Thus, you have obtained the vows of a lay follower! Next, the precepts to be learned are stated. Thus, the actual ritual of bestowing the vows of a lay follower is completed. Next, when stating the precepts to be learned, contemplate in this way: Even if you receive the vows, if you do not protect them, there will be no great benefit, and there will be great faults, so you must protect them. The method of protection is that the Arhats, etc., for as long as they live, abandon the five things such as killing with their minds, and their body and speech also turn away from them. Likewise, I also should learn. Having made this thought, repeat after me. Venerable Teacher, listen! Just as the noble Arhats, for as long as they live, abandon killing, and turn away from killing, likewise, I, named so-and-so, also from this time onwards, for as long as I live, abandon killing, and turn away from killing. With this first branch, I will follow, practice, and act according to the training of the noble Arhats. Furthermore, just as the noble Arhats, for as long as they live, abandon taking what is not given, abandon sexual misconduct, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abandoning false speech, grain alcohol, and artificially intoxicating liquors, which are places of heedlessness. Just as one returns वापस (Wāpas, return) from grain alcohol, artificially intoxicating liquors, and places of heedlessness, so too, I, named [so-and-so], from this time forward, until the end of my life, abandon taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, false speech, grain alcohol, and artificially intoxicating liquors, which are places of heedlessness, just as one returns वापस (Wāpas, return) from grain alcohol, artificially intoxicating liquors, and places of heedlessness. With this fifth branch (referring to abstaining from alcohol), I will follow the teachings of the Arhats, practice accordingly, and act accordingly. The Khenpo (Abbot) says: 'This is the method.' The Upasaka (lay practitioner) replies: 'Excellent!' Although some texts state that the precepts should be repeated three times, there is no specific instruction in the Vinaya, the Karma Shatam, or their commentaries that requires repeating them three times. Therefore, one may recite them once or three times. Thus, you have well obtained the Upasaka vows. The refuge precepts of the Upasaka vows are: having taken refuge in the Buddha, one does not worship worldly gods; having taken refuge in the Dharma, one abandons harming sentient beings; having taken refuge in the Sangha, one does not associate with non-Buddhist friends. The common refuge precepts are four: relying on noble individuals, listening to the sacred Dharma, reflecting properly, and practicing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma. There are also four: not letting the senses run wild, taking vows as much as possible, having compassion for sentient beings, and diligently making offerings to the Three Jewels. One should train in these properly. If the four branches of the Upasaka vows, such as not killing, are violated completely, the vows are lost and must be retaken. If one commits the five, such as killing non-humans, one should confess before a single vow-holder. The other six non-virtues, such as divisive speech, are of the same category, so guard them well by restraining the mind. Thus it is said. This is the ritual for bestowing the complete Upasaka vows. These are explanations of the meaning of 'Upasaka training' from the Karma Shatam. This complete Upasaka accomplishment ritual, called 'Activities Pervading Space,' is widely disseminated through the kindness of many spiritual mentors, primarily the brothers of the noble Manjushri lineage and those bearing the name of Gyalwa Muspa Chenpo Buddha. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Petitioner, Sakya monk, Maitreya Ngawang Kunga Sonam Drakpa Gyaltsen Pal Zangpo, At the secluded meditation cave of Lingka Dewachen (Lingka Sukhavati), at the time of receiving the Bhikshu vows, I wished to create a document for the method of bestowing the complete Upasaka vows. Later, it was written at the great Sakya monastery. May this activity be as vast as the sky! Sarva Mangalam! (All auspiciousness!) According to the wishes of Khenchen Apel Rinpoche, it was served by Guru (teacher). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
