Awang Gön噶索南's Teachings ANK31, The Rite of Accomplishing the Complete Upāsaka Vow: Activities Pervading the Sky. 4-1 ༄༅། །The Rite of Accomplishing the Complete Upāsaka Vow: Activities Pervading the Sky. ༄། །Preparation. The Rite of Accomplishing the Complete Upāsaka Vow: Activities Pervading the Sky. Homage to the Guru, the Buddha, the Banner). Homage to the Guru and the All-Knowing One! Preparation: Arrange offerings well before the embodiment of the Teacher. The person to be ordained, dressed in layman's clothes, should first be made to prostrate three times with the five limbs touching the ground before the Teacher. Then, have them prostrate three times to themselves, and then have them sit squatting in front, with their palms joined at their heart, and say: 'Here, the root of the teachings is the Prātimokṣa vow. There are many ways to explain it, but here, the Prātimokṣa vow spoken of in the Vinaya, the sacred Dharma, will be conferred.' The Vinaya Root Sutra says: 'A Bhikṣu, a Śrāmaṇera, a Bhikṣuṇī, one should not do the latter without having completed the former.' Therefore, in order to gradually learn the teachings, before taking the Bhikṣu vow, one must first take the Śrāmaṇera vow, and before that, one must take the Upāsaka vow. This is also called 'faultless perfection,' because giving these three vows in order does not cause faults for the preceptor and the disciple, and a perfect vow will arise in the disciple's mindstream, so it is called that. 4-2 If it is considered from the perspective of faults, then the latter of the three trainings should not be given without the former having been done first. This is explained in detail in the Vinaya scriptures, and the Root Sutra also says: 'There is a fault if the former is not done first.' Here, from the perspective of 'faultless perfection,' one will first be ordained as an Upāsaka. The meaning of Upāsaka is: Upāsaka (藏文:ཨུ་པ་སི་ཀ་), which is the Sanskrit word for Upāsaka, and its meaning is close to the ultimate virtue of Nirvāṇa, therefore it is called Upāsaka. Generally, according to the explanations in the scriptures, the Upāsaka vow can be divided into: Upāsaka who take refuge in the Three Jewels, Upāsaka who practice one thing, Upāsaka who practice a few things, Upāsaka who practice mostly, Upāsaka who practice completely, Upāsaka who practice celibacy, and Upāsaka who are hired. Here, one will be ordained as a complete Upāsaka. The root of the complete Upāsaka is motivation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Among these distinctions are the vows of complete lay practitioners who are protected from fear (འཇིགས་སྐྱོབ་ཀྱི།), who have good wishes (ལེགས་སྨོན་གྱི།), and who have definite renunciation. Protection from fear is taken with the thought of wanting to be protected from the fear of the king's punishment, diseases, evil spirits, etc., in this life. Good wishes are the vows taken with the thought of wanting to obtain only the happiness of gods and humans in the next life. Even outsiders have that much. Because those vows do not have the thought of renunciation, they do not become vows of individual liberation and the path to liberation. As it says in the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge: 'If outsiders also have discipline arising from taking vows correctly, then is it not a vow of individual liberation? It exists, but it is not a vow of individual liberation, because it depends on existence. The basis is not what makes one escape from sin.' Therefore, in order to become a vow of individual liberation and a path to liberation, it is necessary to be sustained by the thought of renunciation. As it says in the Root Sutra: 'Having made the power of the discipline of definite renunciation.' And in the Three Hundred Disciplines: 'The discipline of definite renunciation abandons suffering.' It is said to place an unfeigned thought of wanting to obtain liberation from suffering and the cessation of sorrow. As Jetsun Rinpoche said: 'To accomplish nirvana, you must abandon attachment to the three realms. To abandon attachment to the three realms, you must remember the faults of samsara.' If you think about remembering the faults of samsara, what kind of suffering and faults are there in samsara? In short, all of samsara, which is included in the three realms and the six realms, is of the nature of suffering. As it says in the Sutra of the Bhagavan: 'The desire realm is with faults, the form realm is also with faults, likewise the formless realm is also with faults, only nirvana is seen without faults.' As it says in the Sutra of Mindfulness: 'Sentient beings in hell are tormented by hellfire, hungry ghosts are tormented by hunger and thirst, animals eat each other, humans are tormented by short lives, gods are tormented by carelessness. In samsara, even on the tip of a needle, there is never happiness.' As it says in the sutra, sentient beings in hell are tormented by unbearable cold and heat, and are miserable. Hungry ghosts suffer unimaginable hunger and thirst. Animals eat each other, and are foolish and ignorant, and so on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
