Notes on the Key Points of Teaching the Root Three Secret Heart Essence Notes on the Key Points of Teaching the Root Three Secret Heart Essence Notes on the key points of teaching from the Great Perfection Root Three Secret Heart Essence, composed by a Vidyadhara. I prostrate and take refuge in the assembly of the glorious Samantabhadra, the nine-vehicle lineage. Please grant your blessings. For the first session of the foundational Trekchö teachings of the Great Perfection Root Three Secret Heart Essence: the practice of leisure and endowment and taking refuge. Second session: the practice of impermanence and generating bodhicitta. Third session: the practice of karma and its results and the seven-branch prayer. Fourth session: the practice of the suffering of samsara and the meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva. Fifth session: the practice of aspiration for enlightenment and the offering of the mandala. Sixth session: the history of this Great Perfection and Guru Yoga. Seventh session: the practice of dedicating merit to enlightenment and the order of receiving the four empowerments. These can be divided into six, five, or four sessions, and each key point can be assigned seven, five, or three days, depending on the circumstances. Then, the preliminary practices of the main practice, the key point of distinguishing the differences between body, speech, and mind, the key point of three equal parts, and the fourth. The recitation of the three syllables (ཨཱཿཧཱུྃ,āḥ hūṃ,Ah Hum,Ah Hum) for purifying obscurations and the fifth. The preliminary practice of the body, the vajra posture, and the sixth. The preliminary practice of speech, expanding, training, softening, seeking the path, and four key points. In total, these ten key points should be assigned the number of days as in the previous preliminary practice stage. During these stages, explain the history of each key point, the twelve teachers of the Great Perfection Trikaya Buddha, the way the teachings were transmitted, and other scriptural references. Seventh, then the preliminary practice of the mind, examining whether body, speech, and mind are one or different. Finding completeness, the difference between mind and external appearances. The definition of the apprehended external appearance and the apprehending consciousness. Examining the nature of reality, in the stage of the source, whether the two gross and subtle external objects arise from the mind, whether they arise from mental factors. The place of dwelling in the middle, the dweller. Examining the place of going in the end, the goer, and these eight key points should be assigned days according to the student's level of understanding.

Thus, experience is integrated into the continuum. These are both preliminary and main practices, so they are very important. At this time, there should not be much explanation, but the oral instructions should be used to distinguish between delusion and obstacles. The duration of the retreat should be arranged according to the circumstances. 7. After that, the introduction to the main practice should be given in an appropriate time, such as five days, three days, or seven days. The oral instructions should be skillfully taught according to the different faculties of each individual. If it is possible to introduce the corresponding reasoning from the Seventeen Tantras, and especially the introduction to Trekchö from the Precious Treasury of the Supreme Vehicle, it would be most auspicious. In this way, in the nature of the main practice, one should recognize the self-abiding meditation that has gained warmth and cultivated the power of post-meditation. The method of mixing equipoise and post-meditation should be taught. The majestic posture of the wrathful ones, the throwing posture of the giants, and the leaping posture of the lions, these three. Abiding arises as the adornment of the mind, scattering arises as the play of the mind, and abiding in the state of non-dual equality, these three. The five poisons are self-liberated, the five doors are self-liberated, and the six aggregates are self-liberated, and these twenty-three objects of focus should also be determined according to the duration of the retreat or the level of understanding, as in the preliminary practice, and should be introduced and skillfully taught. At these times, the stages of Trekchö from the Precious Treasury of Dharmadhatu, the Precious Treasury of Oral Instructions, and the Precious Treasury of the Supreme Vehicle should be used as support. Even if there are no copies of these treatises, the boundaries should be defined and introduced by the oral instructions of the lama. The disciples should not be satisfied with this, but should practice with intense diligence until they have gained stability or have distinguished the differences. In the common preliminary practice, the objects of focus and the duration of the retreat should be as mentioned above. A Dharma assembly should be held every day to explain in detail the subtle points of cause and effect. These twenty-three objects of focus in post-meditation should be introduced to those who have sharp faculties and have meditated for a long time. For beginners, adjustments should be made according to the situation of the other person. Furthermore, for this unsurpassed and profound great instruction, the outer preliminary practice has seven objects of focus, the inner uncommon preliminary practice has ten objects of focus, the special preliminary practice of the mind has eight objects of focus, the great introduction to the main practice, and the cultivation of the power of post-meditation.
