Thirteenth Chapter: Explaining the Dharma to Others Thirteenth Chapter: Explaining the Dharma to Others In this chapter on explaining the Dharma to others, there are five points: demonstrating the reasons why one should teach others without being stingy with the Dharma; the necessity of teaching the Dharma; the manner of how to teach; the nature of the Dharma to be taught; and a summary of the meaning of teaching in this way. The first point is explained with one verse, starting with "The steadfast ones": Bodhisattvas who seek complete enlightenment, upon finding the Dharma and realizing it without error, will explain it to sentient beings without any stinginess, thereby perfecting their own perfections and maturing other sentient beings. There is no better method than this, so it is necessary to teach. The steadfast bodhisattvas obtain their body or life through the great accumulation of previously accumulated merits, and also obtain things like "wealth accumulation," having endured great hardships such as voyages at sea, and even after they become their own, they will eventually give them up, and recognizing that they are things without a reliable essence, they give material gifts with a supremely joyful mind to suffering sentient beings. So, how can one fulfill the wishes of others? It is by constantly giving away kingdoms or vast wealth. The sublime Dharma is vast and boundless, never running out, and it benefits beings in all ways in this life and in future lives, so unlike material giving, it has a reliable essence that can be trusted forever. When the Buddha appears in the world and the teachings abide, seekers of the Dharma themselves do not have to go through hardships like entering the sea to seek treasure, but it is easy to accomplish. Moreover, even if the Dharma is given very generously, the Dharma in one's own mindstream will not be exhausted, but will increase more and more, and these Dharmas will also increase in others, let alone if it is not given only once? The word "see" is to complete the verse and has no other meaning. Therefore, after seeking the Dharma, bodhisattvas will definitely teach it to others. Second, the necessity of teaching the Dharma is: the ultimate Dharma of realization that the noble ones realize individually is not within the scope of words and letters.

Although it has passed away, one can never attain such a state without studying and contemplating the Dharma of the scriptures indicated by words and letters. Therefore, making the Dharma of the scriptures the object of study and contemplation is the method of self-realization taught by the Bhagavan. Because the Dharma of realization in the minds of the noble ones, which is to be realized by each individual, cannot be directly shown without self-realization. In order to make such Dharma of realization manifest and self-realized, the Buddhas, the Bhagavans, have not taught or do not teach the Dharma in the form of words and letters. Because words and letters cannot truly represent the meaning to be realized by each individual, as it transcends worldly expressions, thoughts, metaphors, and arguments, it is called self-realization. Because it is not like knowing conditioned phenomena such as pillars and vases, and unconditioned phenomena such as space, in the world, thus, suchness is to be realized by each individual who possesses the wisdom of the noble ones. If those who have attained worldly meditative absorption cannot conceive of the realm of those who have not attained meditative absorption, what need is there to mention that the realm of wisdom that transcends the world is not an object of thought for worldly hearing and so on? Then, how is it said that the profound Sutras explain the definitive meaning, the meaning of self-realization understood in the mind of the Buddha? The Bhagavan, who has great compassion for sentient beings, is like a great serpent. This is shown as a metaphor. The great serpent Ajagara, whose back is so large that fields can be plowed and rivers can flow on it, and the water flowing from its mouth flows far away like a great river. The wild animals think it is a river and drink from it, but they die from the poison in its mouth. Those animals are drawn in by the breath of the serpent's mouth and drawn into its mouth. Therefore, the Buddha is like a great serpent, possessing four kinds of wisdom, which is very reasonable. That is to say, whatever scripture explains all meanings without inversion is the Holy Dharma that can attract others like the breath of a serpent, that is, the twelve branches of scripture. For the wild animals
