The Cutting Instructions for the Heart Practice of Vajrasattva, strung together like a garland, liberating delusion and confusion in the expanse. This is the treatise entitled "The Cutting Instructions for the Heart Practice of Vajrasattva, strung together like a garland, liberating delusion and confusion in the expanse." By the great translator Dharmashri. Siddhi rastu! With the sword of self-cognizant wisdom, cut through dualistic clinging, and with the all-pervading, immutable, mind-free expanse, conquer (conceptual thought). To the essence of the Lama Vajrasattva, I prostrate and clearly and easily explain the profound meaning of cutting through delusion. Here, in the minor instructions on the branch of the heart practice of Vajrasattva, to practice the instructions on cutting through dualistic clinging, there are three parts: preliminary, main practice, and concluding practice. The preliminary practice is: as an antidote to attachment to the objects of this life, which is the root of clinging to samsara, contemplate impermanence and death; as an antidote to attachment to the pleasures and wealth of samsara, contemplate the suffering of samsara, stirred by a sense of weariness. Thus, direct your mind towards accomplishing the state of liberation. Therefore, purify the mind by preceding it with the stages of refuge and bodhicitta, accumulation and purification, according to the root instructions. In particular, pray intensely to abandon self-grasping and to take obstacles as the path. The main practice has three parts: deciding with view, practicing with meditation, and enhancing with conduct. First, on a comfortable seat, arrange the body in the seven-point posture. Keep the speech natural. Do not deliberately tighten or loosen the mind. Do not focus on thoughts of the three times in any way, but leave them in their natural state. From that state, with the wisdom of introspection, trace the origin, movement, and cessation of your own mind. Whatever appears, such as shape, color, object of sight, viewer, etc., examine its essence with great attention. As a result, all thoughts that have arisen, will arise, and are arising will vanish without a trace like a flash of lightning. The mind itself, which is nowhere to be seen and nothing to be established, appears nakedly as a groundless, rootless, empty-clear, objectless awareness. Recognize that naked awareness and rest naturally in a state free from focus, thought, and expression. As the root instructions say: "View the mind as free from grasping and being grasped; it is without beginning, end, or middle; it is without color, shape, or identification." And here it says: "Samsara, nirvana, and all phenomena, in the nature of emptiness without appearance; like illusions, dreams, and reflections of the moon in water; one's own mind is groundless and rootless."

Ah! Cutting through is the very nature of space. When subject and object, grasping and being grasped, are not established, self-arisen wisdom is self-illuminating. Cut off the root of confusion, of accepting and rejecting, hope and fear. Nakedly seeing, recognize your own place, and rest naturally without pride. So it is said. Secondly, cutting the four maras in the sphere of reality. Primarily, in all post-meditation states, the mara of obstruction, where conceptual thoughts arise based on the objects of the six consciousnesses. The unobstructed mara, where feelings of sadness, fear, etc., arise in the mind, independent of external circumstances. The mara of joy and sorrow, where conceptual thoughts of grasping and being grasped arise based on the gathering of favorable conditions. The mara of pride, where any thought, large or small, arises without changing the conceptual thought. As it says in the collected teachings of Machik: There are four types of maras: the mara of obstruction and the unobstructed mara, the mara of joy and sorrow and the mara of pride. All of these are included in the mara of pride. Therefore, whatever thoughts arise, it is merely the arising of the mara. If attachment arises to it, one is controlled by the mara. Therefore, the way to cut it is: as soon as a thought arises, immediately say PHAṬ (ཕཊཿ,phaṭ,phaṭ,cut!), and whatever appears, cut it in the sphere of non-grasping and non-elaboration. As Machik says: Cut all the maras in the mind, and the very nature of mind is liberated in the unborn sphere of reality.
