Chapter Ten: Explanation of the Five Planets of the Philosophical Schools Used for Dates and Days. Now, in this tenth chapter, I will explain the five planets of the philosophical schools used for dates and days. Those who possess intelligence, listen! In the "Great Commentary," it says, "Now, the collection of days and nights is spoken of for the purpose of enjoying auspicious stars and so forth." Just as the ritual for using days and nights is explained in the "Tantra Commentary," what has been said before is sufficient. If one were to write a ritual for using dates that is not mentioned in the "Tantra Commentary," what would be the purpose? Therefore, if one thinks that one should respect the established rules of the Bhagavan, then it should be stated. That is, the way it is explained in the "Tantra Commentary" is because the slowness of the three fierce ones and the stability of the two peaceful ones make the days and nights comfortable. If that were the case, as mentioned before, the stability of the three fierce ones and the slowness of the peaceful ones, the distinction between day and night is not clearly stated in the "Tantra Commentary." Because there was a discrepancy starting from the enjoyment of the sun and dates, Khenpo Zhalu made this determination of the five planets for use on dates in order to correct it. In Zhalu it says, "It is reasonable to combine the enjoyment of the sun with days and nights, or to do manual calculations of the five planets for use on dates. The first method will be explained, and the second method I have also done, and it is available separately, so it should be looked at." Therefore, this newly created determination for use on dates has no fault of contradicting the "Tantra Commentary." In the root tantra it says, "By the wisdom of explaining the mandala and enjoyment of the sun's three days, the mandalas of Mars and so on are perfectly accomplished from their respective movements. One day is transformed by the stars, and the mandala distinguishes them. The obtained results become stars, and the remainder is again multiplied by sixty. The hours of the mandala division, likewise the water clocks and breaths, the planets obtained by the mandala division, each day and night are the lords of men." This must also be explained as explaining the mandala and enjoyment of the three days of each of the five planets. Therefore, the constant enjoyments of each of the five planets used for dates and days, and the rituals for purifying the actions of houses and stars, are established as being explained in the "Tantra Commentary." And the determinations of the remaining calculations are those of the philosophical schools.

Therefore, it should be attested by calculation, seeking from the initial absorption of emptiness, so this should also be understood as non-different from the determination of the Bhagavan. Even so, if someone thinks that this quote from the Root Tantra, "The lord of men each day," only shows the wheel and enjoyment of each day, and does not show dates, etc., then, is it not the case that the Root Tantra does not mention the wheel of the sun's dates? Because what forms the basis of the daily wheel is not the date wheel. Because, as it is said in the tantra, "Having made days, nights, hours, and minutes into breaths, they return to the three." Therefore, one should aspire to have scholars establish norms according to the view of the tantra commentary. I, too, in order to prevent the footprints of the wise from disappearing, after starting to explain from days and nights, again repeat the determination of the five planets used for dates in this treatise. This has three points: the common basis of the five planets—the correction of year and month; the explanation of each determination; the determination of the four modes of movement. The first point is that things like "evil intelligence past year multiplied by the sun" are the work of calculating the dates and months from the year correction, which has already been explained. The second point is to explain each determination in detail, which has three points: the rough slow, fast, and intermediate calculation; the middle calculation of the houses; the detailed calculation of the stars. The first point has two points: Dhruva and the actual slow, fast, and intermediate calculation. The first point has three points: each Dhruva; the way to move the monthly Dhruva; the way to collect the shares. The first point is that, for the sake of Mars, the month correction is placed in six positions. From top to bottom, one must multiply in sequence by form, hole, neck, fire, dot, sea-victorious form, and dragon mountain. Because the tenets of Mars have constant dates, two hours, nineteen minutes, one breath, one hundred forty-three parts of the hole-eye hand, and one hundred forty-four parts of the mountain-sky-mountain, these accumulate to one month, so the monthly determination arises in this way. Among them, from top to bottom, giving in sequence the sun, hole-fire, time, fire, form-sky-eye, time-born-ocean, etc., is the remainder of the calculation. From below that, in sequence, are mountain-sky-mountain and hole-eye-hand.
