if one knows composition, one will not be confused about verses; if one knows rhetoric, one will not be confused about names; if one knows drama, one will not be confused about languages; if one knows mathematics, one will not be confused about numerical places. Among these five sciences, poetry is: One must follow the system of the teacher Dandin, which is outstanding among all ancient poetry. It is explained in terms of body, ornamentation, and elimination of faults. The body is: As it says in the same text, \"It exists in three forms: verse, prose, and mixed.\" It is necessary to know the two types: those that come from the scriptures and those that come from treatises. The scriptures come from the Abhidharmasamuccaya: \"A verse can have one line, two lines, three lines, four lines, five lines, or even six lines.\" For example, one line is: A Brahmin asked, 'How deep is the water?' A single verse asked, and the answer was, 'The lord of men, up to the knees.' And so on. What comes from treatises is: It is definitely four lines, as it says: 'A four-line verse is divided into meter and class.' Ornamentation is: The distinction of uncommon ornaments, the thirty-five types of common ornaments of meaning, and easy and difficult sound ornaments, and so on, as well as the ornament of riddles, and their various transformations. Elimination of faults is: Loss of meaning, contradiction of meaning, sameness of meaning, doubt, and sequence, inferior sound, loss of pause, loss of composition, and lack of connection, and contradiction with place, time, art, the world, scripture, and reason. These ten faults, poets should completely avoid in poetry. By knowing the elimination of faults, one can avoid confusion. Composition is: The root sutra made by the ancient non-Buddhist sage known as Kapila or Raktavarna, and the examples made by the king of gods, etc., lacking eight qualities, the teacher of the degenerate age, Ratna Akara Shanti, that is, Precious" } ] ============================================================
