Craftsmanship. Craftsmanship. Now, let's talk a little about the history of culture. As stated by Lord Maitreya: "If one is not skilled in the five sciences, even a noble being will not become omniscient." The five major sciences mentioned are: grammar and logic, which refute evil speech; craftsmanship and medicine, which are relied upon by the wise; and inner science, which is for understanding everything oneself. Among these five, the first is that it is now time to explain craftsmanship. Because all cultures are included in the branches of craftsmanship. The movement of the body connected to the mind is called body craftsmanship, and that which is mainly expressed through language is called speech craftsmanship. That which is not related to either of these two, but is only controlled by the thoughts of the mind, is called mind craftsmanship. It is said that there is no craftsmanship that is not included in these three. Now, using a general name to name specific things, painting and sculpture are called craftsmanship. Regarding how the tradition of painting arose in the world: In the past, when King Fearless Protector ruled the kingdom with righteousness, and people's lifespans increased to eighty thousand years, a Brahmin's son died untimely. The king took the Brahmin to the King of Death, Yama, and requested that his son be returned. Yama said, "Because his karma is exhausted, it is impossible to return him." Eventually, the two sides fought each other, and the whole world was terrified. Brahma intervened and drew a picture of the Brahmin's son as if he were alive, and then gave it to the Brahmin, pacifying the war. Later, the king went to Brahma to ask about the method of painting. Brahma praised, "The king of mountains is Mount Meru, the king of egg-born creatures is the Garuda, the king of humans is the king, and likewise, painting is the king of art." He also prophesied the divine craftsman Vishvakarman, who is said to have created special places for craftsmanship. Generally speaking, during the time when the teacher Shakyamuni Buddha was alive, the tradition of painting was that a being with form sent a painting of the teacher as a gift to Uddiyana. As a gift from the daughter Flower Vine, as many paintings as possible were drawn on cloth, and the tradition of painting was suppressed by painting on top of the rays of light emanating from the teacher's body.

It is said that it flourished in Kashmir and the central regions. Maitreya Bodhisattva (Maitreya Buddha) acted as the patron, and the celestial artisans built the statue of Jowo Rinpoche. It is said that for about a hundred years after the Parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha, human artisans, through the magical power of karma, were able to create wonderful crafts such as statues that could actually manifest miracles. These crafts gradually declined, and many celestial artisans transformed into humans, resulting in the eight great miraculous objects of Magadha, such as Bodh Gaya. Later, during the time of King Bimbisara, who believed in Buddhism, the layout of reliefs and paintings was made to match the works of the celestial artisans, and this tradition was known as the ancient Western tradition. During the time of King Palden Chokyong, Dhiman and his son Biropalo made it conform to the works of the Naga artisans, and these traditional schools were called the Eastern deities. In terms of painting, the father's tradition was called Eastern painting, and the son's painting was called Central painting. In the Kashmir region, later Hasuraja pioneered both painting and relief styles, which are now called Kashmiri style. In Tibet, during the time of the early Dharma King Songtsen Gampo, both painting and relief mainly adopted the Indian and Nepalese traditions. Later, it is said that relief mainly adopted the Nepalese style, and painting mainly adopted the Chinese style, so these styles developed similarly. Later, there appeared a skilled artisan named Dopa Tashi Gyaltsen. He had two disciples who were more excellent than himself: one was Manla Dondrubpa of Lhodrak Mentang, who is said to have recalled his previous life just by looking at the Thangka called "Great Painting of Han Land" that he had painted when he was born in China in his previous life, and was an emanation of Manjushri; the other was Khyentse Chenmo from Gongkar Garto. The former created documents conforming to the sutras and tantras, and determined sixteen aspects such as the body proportions and clothing decorations of each of the eight major postures, forming the Mentang school of painting. The latter formed the Khyentse school of painting, which was slightly different in style from the former, and each inherited the style according to their own views, which is still flourishing today. In addition, the six arts mentioned in the commentaries of the *Mahavyutpatti* and the *Ksudrakavastu*, which belong to the branch of craftsmanship.
