He said, 'In the place of illness, meditate on a white 'Ah' (藏文:ཨ,seed syllable,梵文天城体:अ,IAST: a, meaning: without). Meditate on it becoming smaller and smaller, eventually disappearing and becoming without inherent existence.' 1-245 He said, 'Abide naturally in that state. When practicing Mahayana Bodhicitta, there are four necessities: suppressing happiness, ending suffering, companionship in solitude, and care during illness.' He said, 'If there is not such a Dharma, one should not be too happy even when feeling happy. If misfortune is encountered, one will feel that death is approaching. Therefore, you should recognize that the nature of samsara is suffering, and thinking it is happiness is a wrong perception. If happiness arises, observe from where it arises, where it stays, from where it disappears, and what its color and shape are. By observing, recognize its lack of inherent existence, and this is the suppression of happiness. If there is not such a Dharma, when suffering arises, one will think, 'I have encountered such misfortune,' thus intensifying the suffering. But if there is this practice of Bodhicitta, one will understand that the root of all suffering is clinging to 'I'. Because you cling to your body, you feel suffering. Suffering arises from the aggregation of causes and conditions. If there is no target, the arrow will not hit; if there is no accumulation, the bird will not land. Similarly, if there is no clinging to 'I', there will be no reason for suffering. Suffering arises because of your own clinging. If you do not cling to 'I', there will be no such suffering.' 1-246 If you think, 'Do land, stones, mountains, sky, and space have suffering?', the suffering will subside. This is the ending of suffering. Companionship in solitude means that if there is not such a Dharma, one cannot stay alone. Staying in a room, one wants to go out; staying outside, one wants to go back to the room. But if there is such a Dharma, one will understand that the root of generating all suffering is clinging to 'I'. Because clinging to something without inherent existence, one is put into suffering. So, let go of everything, whether good or bad. Think, 'Everything is fine'. Since all sentient beings in samsara are our kind parents, take the suffering of sentient beings into your heart and dedicate your happiness and merit to sentient beings. By repeatedly practicing this exchange, experiencing this taste, one will feel that the day is short and the night is short. This is companionship in solitude. Care during illness means that if there is no practice of Bodhicitta, when one is sick, one will not satisfy all the caregivers. One will feel, 'This person should give me better care,' or feel, 'I am kind to this person,' thus creating dissatisfaction.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone comes from 'རྒྱལ་' (place name) and asks about this mind-training, no one can answer. You are sick because you cling to 'I'; if you don't cling to 'I,' you won't get sick. If nursing you helps, then keep nursing you without end. This medicine must be taken, this ritual must be done. After doing it, don't leave anything remaining. Whether or not you can be liberated from samsara, let 'ཐུལ་' (person's name) destroy it this time, be content! Give this self-grasping to me to destroy! If you don't destroy it, you can't become a Buddha, (the master) said. Now, you think you are sick because you cling to your body, meditate like this, and you will not become arrogant towards others, so you are being nursed. The mind-training of the Great Vehicle is that if the actions of body, speech, and mind bring suffering, then accept it all; if it brings good deeds, then dedicate it to all beings. Body and speech are like illusions and echoes, in the clear light mind there is no coming and going. The actions spoken of are divided into two types: accepting from near and accepting from far. The first is that all the suffering of parents, relatives, and friends now ripens on me, may all suffering be completely cut off. The second is that all the suffering of hell ripens on me, May all suffering be completely cut off. Then accept the suffering of ghosts, animals, asuras, gods, and all humans. If good deeds arise, dedicate them to all beings, no matter what roots of virtue arise, may all my roots of virtue ripen for my parents and all sentient beings in the six realms, may all sentient beings have happiness and be free from suffering. Body and speech are like illusions and echoes, the body is like an illusion, the illusionist relies on the power of mantras and substances, casts mantras on the eyes of the audience, and conjures up various illusions, although they appear real, they are not actually so. At the same time as appearing, there is no substance, it is far from the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, it is only an appearance. Use this to compare your own body, through meditation, meditate on appearance without inherent existence. Speech is like an echo, in a valley with an echo, in a narrow ravine, if the length of the mountain exceeds a certain limit and is hard, if you shout 'Sister Echo Goddess' at it, it will respond as you call. Saying there is an echo, there is an echo, saying there is not, there is no denying it. Use these empty sounds to compare, through meditation, meditate on it being no different from an echo. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
