Collection of Teachings on Mind Training LJ25 Overcoming Future Obstacles to Mahayana Mind Training Overcoming Future Obstacles to Mahayana Mind Training There are three aspects to overcoming future obstacles to Mahayana mind training: The four places of forgetting mind training are: the crucial point at the time of death, the bardo (intermediate state), the mother's womb, and future rebirths. The four places of straying are: severe harm caused by humans, harm caused by non-humans, severe illnesses caused by the elements, and the arising of strong disturbing emotions. The remedy for these is: To make offerings to the lama (guru) and the Three Jewels, and to pray for blessings so that the realization of Mahayana mind training, without any perversion, may arise in my mindstream. Pray for blessings so that I may not forget the four places of forgetting, and may not stray in the four places of straying. Then, after offering a torma (ritual cake) to the Dharma protectors, do the same. After accumulating merit, also make the aspiration: May Mahayana mind training arise in my mindstream! May I not forget the places of forgetting! May I not stray in the four places of straying! Thus, make aspirations. Through the common merit of all sentient beings, may it also be accomplished in this way. The four decisive points for practicing Mahayana mind training are: Cut one path, focus on one intention, destroy arising thoughts, and apply antidotes like striking. Cutting one path means: not calculating the stages of the path. The stronger the clinging to self, the better. If you can destroy it today, you will attain Buddhahood today; if you can destroy it tomorrow, you will attain Buddhahood tomorrow; if you do not destroy it, you will not attain Buddhahood. The moment you destroy it is the moment you attain Buddhahood. Focusing on one intention means: whatever you do, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, do not deviate from how to destroy self-grasping and how to benefit sentient beings. Do not have too many other intentions. Destroying arising thoughts means: Some say to abandon thoughts, but you do not need to abandon thoughts; instead, you should transform them into the path. Thoughts are the material of the Dharmakaya (body of truth). When a small disturbing emotion first arises, you must immediately destroy it. If you do not destroy it, it will grow and become difficult to abandon. When a disturbing emotion first arises, it can be stopped simply by applying the antidote, so why say 'O lo, O lo' and not abandon it? When a thought arises, observe from where it arises, where it abides, and where it ceases. Through observation, recognize its nature as empty, and like meeting a familiar person from the past, recognize its nature as empty and transform it into the path. It is like snow falling on a hot stone, transforming it into emptiness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, the antidote is to destroy. It means that as soon as afflictions arise, one should meditate with whatever antidote is beneficial, like using a large hammer to smash a pig's head. When practicing the mind training of the Great Vehicle, there are three ways to rely on antidotes: non-arising, destroying upon contact, and pursuing. The first is like a Mongolian taming a tiger. First, one learns the method of taming a tiger. By learning to tame a tiger, when a tiger appears, one will be able to subdue it. If one has not learned beforehand, one cannot subdue it and will be controlled by it. Similarly, for afflictions such as strong desire, first transform it into Ram(藏文:རཾ་,梵文天城体:ram,梵文罗马拟音:ram, fire), then take it back, reverse it, and dispel it. Do not leave the mind in a state of indifference, but naturally train the mind, so that when afflictions arise, the antidote can overcome the conditions and afflictions cannot control you. If one does not learn beforehand, the antidote cannot overcome the conditions and one will be controlled by afflictions. Destroying upon contact means not acting like the old and young men who encountered robbers. Similarly, afflictions do not become large from the beginning. When a small affliction arises at first, one should immediately ask 'Who are you?' and then reverse and dispel it, so that afflictions cannot control you and the antidote can overcome the conditions. If one does not reverse it at that time, it will become larger and larger, and then the antidote itself will not be able to overcome it. Therefore, as soon as afflictions arise, one should reverse and dispel them like using a large hammer to smash a pig's head. Pursuing means pursuing the state of being controlled by afflictions. Thinking, 'Ah, what right do you, such an insignificant thing, have to do such a thing?' This is pursuing. Furthermore, when afflictions arise, thinking, 'It is because of you that I wander in samsara. Do you still want to do this?' Then reverse and dispel it. In short, the preliminary is non-arising, the main part is destroying upon contact, and the conclusion is pursuing. The key points of mind training are three: accumulating, generating, and purifying. Accumulating means that when one is sick, one thinks that there are countless diseases in the world, and may all these diseases ripen on me now, and may all suffering cease completely. This is accumulating the suffering of all sentient beings on oneself. Generating means visualizing a completely transparent hole in any place. As it becomes larger and larger, visualize it completely dissolving into emptiness, and abide in that state. Purifying... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
