MARPA'S INSTRUCTIONS MARPA32 Overcoming Obstacles to Tummo Overcoming Obstacles to Tummo Homage to the feet of the venerable and precious Lama! Regarding the instructions for correcting errors in Tummo meditation: If bliss blazes and Bodhicitta is lost, it may be because the food is too good. Reduce the nutrition and eat less. If vows may be broken, request secret empowerment from the Lama. If obstacles arise during [Samadhi (meditative absorption)], it may be due to demonic intrusion. Tie black and white threads around the waist and bind with a black silk cloth. [If there is no bliss,] Recite wrathful mantras at the boundary of Suna Gu. If the wind goes between the flesh and blood, turns into a bruise, and there is a danger of developing sores, the way to eliminate this is: Whether a mantra practitioner or a monk, shave the head and wash with warm urine of someone who has attained accomplishment or has mantra power. Massage the body. Do this many times [three times each day], and you will surely be freed from the fault. [By repeatedly prostrating and circumambulating the Lama, repeatedly request.] Thus spoke the venerable Lama. Now, the instructions on clear light will be shown: In the time of deep sleep, the body is endowed with the key points, and the king of mind dwells in the heart chakra knot. The method for this is to first go to sleep. First, exhaust the body for about three days. During this time, stay awake at night and do as much virtuous practice as possible. Then massage the body, nourish the elements, and the key point of the body is to lie down comfortably in the lion posture. The time is deep sleep, in the heart chakra. The four petals of the heart chakra Have A Nu Ta Ra written on them, and in the center, contemplate Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽). In the ordinary state of sleep, focus the mind on the A in front, and the gross thoughts of aggregates, elements, and sense bases will subside. Holding the mind on Nu is called the appearance of emptiness. When subtle thoughts subside, holding the mind on Ta is called the appearance of increasing great emptiness. Then, when sleepiness occurs, hold the mind on Ra, which is the appearance of near attainment of very emptiness. Then, when sleepiness completely disappears, focus awareness on Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In short, abiding in the essence of bliss and emptiness is the luminosity of all emptiness. The taste of sleep turning into bliss and emptiness is the clear appearance of bliss without conceptualization, which is the experience of luminosity. At this time, dreams should be guarded, considering them as obstacles. Such sleep is very close to the luminosity of ordinary sleep, almost realizing luminosity. If there are such key points, realizing luminosity is effortless. Turn over, have someone wake you up, observe whether you have entered into the sleep of ignorance, and then fall asleep as before. That night, sleep for three or four sessions, as appropriate. Then, fall asleep for two or three sessions, etc., as before, integrating the aggregates, etc., into subtle realms, and integrating the realms into the mind. The mind is then integrated into ignorance. By falling asleep in this way, ignorance naturally ceases, and the memory of conceptual thoughts is forgotten. Grasp the sleep of ignorance, which is like an iron hook, [the mind is integrated into the mind. [the mind is integrated into the mind.]] By sleeping in bliss and emptiness, one does not allow consciousness to go anywhere, and luminosity will be directly experienced in sleep. After waking up, one should meditate as follows: display a Thangka (religious painting) of the Yidam deity in front, and look at it with one-pointed concentration, and visualize it clearly appearing in oneself. If it is clear, then abide in that clarity, meditating in bliss and emptiness without any object of focus. Make it clear again, look at the Thangka. Then meditate just like the Thangka, and meditate in bliss and emptiness. Visualize that in the state of emptiness, the taste of bliss showers down like rain. Alternately meditate on the deity's form and bliss and emptiness, and when you are accustomed to it, your own body will experience the taste of bliss, abiding in bliss and emptiness without birth. At this time, when sleeping at night, etc., meditate on sleep as before. In the post-meditation period, by meditating in this way, happiness and other sensations will arise in the body, and appearances will arise clearly in the state of bliss and emptiness. Thus, in this life, one can abide in luminosity and attain supreme accomplishment. If one does not attain supreme accomplishment in this life, one can also grasp luminosity in the Bardo (intermediate state). Then one will become a Buddha in the Bardo, and it is impossible to involuntarily enter the Bardo. If one has entered the womb, even at the time of taking birth, one can voluntarily enter the womb for the benefit of others. This can only be done by those who practice the illusory body and these two. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
