During meditation, awareness (རིག་པ་) needs to be simultaneous with focus (དམིགས་པ་), wherever the focus is directed. 'Like a king imprisoned,' means: Do not intentionally interrupt, and if awareness cannot be recognized, and there is no object of focus, then if one is in a state of distraction, that is wrong. For example, just as a king is imprisoned and his attendants cannot resist, one must clearly establish awareness, recognize the nature of awareness, and keep emptiness (སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་) firmly in mind, so that the self-nature of all phenomena will be naturally pure, and the experience of the inseparability of awareness and emptiness will easily arise. 'When hungry, mother and child rely on each other,' means: If one completely abandons external objects and completely falls into emptiness, that is annihilation emptiness, and the non-dual wisdom (ཡེ་ཤེས་) will not arise. For example, if a mother and child do not meet, the mother will miss the child, and the child will miss the mother, and both will suffer. If the mother and child rely on each other, the pain of longing will be eliminated, and both mother and child will be happy. Similarly, if external objects and consciousness are severed, external objects will suffer because of consciousness, and consciousness will suffer because of external objects. If one knows that external objects and consciousness are inseparable, the bonds of hope and fear will be broken, and non-dual wisdom will arise. 'The vulture craves the flesh of the charnel ground,' means: For example, when a vulture spreads its wings and circles in the sky, it searches for prey. When it sees the prey with its eyes, it folds its wings, does not look left or right, and flies directly to the prey, devouring the flesh to its heart's content. Similarly, a yogi like a vulture spreads the wings of tranquility (ཞི་གནས་), uses the eyes of insight (ལྷག་མཐོང་) to observe, and when he finds prey like the view of being free from extremes (མཐའ་བྲལ་གྱི་ལྟ་བ་, the view of being free from all extremes), he will not be attached to the eight worldly dharmas (འཇིག་རྟེན་གྱི་ཆོས་བརྒྱད་, gain, loss, disgrace, fame, praise, criticism, suffering, and happiness), and will abide in the meaning of the view. 'The pig eats without distinguishing between clean and unclean,' means: A pig does not distinguish between clean and dirty, and will eat whatever comes before it. Similarly, for a yogi with a broad view, one should know that all appearances are unborn (སྐྱེས་མེད་), like clouds in the sky. 'The lion intimidates the deer,' means: Just seeing the figure of a lion or hearing its roar, all the deer will be terrified, trembling and unable to move. Wherever the lion is, it will not feel fear or unease. Similarly, a yogi like a lion is neither afraid of becoming a Buddha nor disgusted with samsara. In the realm of the unborn nature of reality (ཆོས་ཉིད་), he will abide without fear. 'The lotus is not stained by mud,' means: For example, just as a lotus grows from mud but is not stained by mud, similarly, a yogi like a lotus, although living in samsara, is not stained by the faults of samsara. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
