The Collected Teachings of Marpa: MARPA2 The Root Text and Commentary on Practicing the Innate Path 1-1-30a ༄༅། །The Root Text and Commentary on Practicing the Innate Path ༄། །Homage to glorious Heruka! The so-called 'Salt Sea' is: leaning against a mountain, wearing the sky as clothes, spreading the sun and moon as a cushion, sleeping on the tip of a spear, drinking poison water when thirsty, filling the belly with wind when drowning, chasing monkeys when distracted, waving at the top of a victory banner when drowsy, reveling in the house of youth when old, abandoning past and future when regretting, appealing to the realm of no letters when weary, speaking to the echo of a rock when doubting, moving the pegs of grasping and being grasped when clinging, imprisoning the king when arrogant, walking with mother and child when hungry, vultures feasting on flesh in the charnel ground, pigs eating everything clean and unclean, lions overpowering mountain goats with their might, lotuses not stained by mud. The so-called 'Salt Sea' is like mixing a hundred measures of salt with a hundred measures of water. When the salt dissolves, there are only a hundred measures. The saltiness and concentration do not decrease, and the water does not decrease either. Looking at the salt, it tastes salty; looking at the water, it tastes like water. But one cannot point to this and say, 'This is salt,' and point to that and say, 'This is water.' Similarly, all phenomena of samsara and nirvana are contained within the duality of the grasped object and the grasping mind. But ultimately, the object itself does not exist. The object is the nature of the mind, and the mind is the nature of the object. Apart from the mind, one cannot point to this and say, 'This is the object.' The nature of the mind appears as the object. As the scripture says, 'From emptiness, all kinds of things arise. When examined, nothing is seen, yet everything appears.' 1-1-30b The so-called 'leaning against a mountain' is like how the salt cannot form a sea without relying on a mountain. To realize the meaning of the aforementioned non-duality, one needs the three: hearing, thinking, and meditating. The wisdom of hearing identifies afflictions, the wisdom of thinking belittles afflictions, and the wisdom of meditation uproots and abandons afflictions. The so-called 'wearing the sky as clothes' is that all experiences are collections of conceptual thoughts. Observing conceptual thoughts, when separated from all foundations, appearance is also separated from all foundations, appearing without existence. There is no appearance other than emptiness, and no emptiness other than appearance. Realizing such a meaning is called the view being equal to the edge of the sky. The so-called 'spreading the sun and moon as a cushion' is that one needs to be connected with skillful means and union, the sun --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Wisdom is the symbol, the moon is the symbol of means.' 'Sleeping on the tip of a spear' means: During meditation, consciousness must be concentrated on one point. Do not dwell on the past, do not have hopes or fears for the future, and do not cling to the present moment as either existent or nonexistent. Let it rest naturally in a state free from all attachments. 'When thirsty, drink poisonous water' means: For example, when you wake up thirsty, even if you know it is poisonous water, if it is blessed with a mantra, there is no harm in drinking it. Similarly, after arising from meditation, no matter what appears, all phenomena are without inherent existence. Realize that everything is like an illusion, and act with purity like the sky. Know that arising is unborn. Now, to counteract the opposing attachments, here are the skillful means of applying the antidote path: 'When sinking, fill the vase with wind' means: Sinking refers to a state where the body is weak and wants to lie down and rest. At this time, tighten the lower breath, shake the body with the upper body, and awaken awareness. 'When distracted, chase after the monkey' means: For example, a dog chases after a wild animal, and kills it wherever it catches it. Similarly, in the state of distraction, kill the distraction in that very state. 'When dull, wave the flag on the top of the flagpole' means: Dullness refers to a state where one does not want to practice, does not want to recite, and does not want to speak. If you feel restless and uneasy, that is dullness. At this time, go to a high mountain or a pleasant place, sing the Vajra song, do everything you want to do without any suppression, and then relax your awareness and return. 'When declining, frolic in the house of the young' means: Declining refers to a state where consciousness is withering, feeling hungry, saying that practice is useless, and so on, becoming discouraged and not wanting to practice. At this time, think of the young. When young, thoughts are also high. One will think: 'I can do it!'. Because of feeling hungry, one will feel that one's thoughts are narrow, one's heart is narrow, and one is not as good as others. One will think: 'I have no choice but to do this.' 'When regretting, burn the past and future with fire' means: The person who is practicing now, because of strong faith, has invested their body and wealth in the Dharma, but because they have not grasped the key points of practice, they are not confident in their view. At this time, a knot of doubt will arise. A person with wrong views will say: 'What is the use of the Dharma?' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
